
No Sunday Scaries as No. 4 Pitt Sweeps Virginia Tech on Halloween

PITTSBURGH – Head coach Dan Fisher reached the 20-win mark for the seventh time in his nine seasons at the helm of No. 4 Pitt volleyball (20-2, 10-2 ACC) as the Panthers swept Virginia Tech (10-14, 1-11 ACC) at Fitzgerald Field House Sunday afternoon.
Pitt held the Hokies under 20 points in each set, earning its second consecutive sweep and its 11th of the season, by scores of 25-15, 25-19, 26-17. The Panthers had the advantage in kills (47-24), assists (41-20), service aces (7-3), digs (32-12) and hitting percentage (.325-.169). The Hokies had more blocks (13.0-6.0).
Right side hitter Chinaza Ndee led Pitt with 11 kills on .238 hitting while outside hitter Kayla Lund had 10 on .375. Lund added a match-high nine digs and two service aces.
Middle blocker Serena Gray contributed six kills on .444 hitting and posted a team-best four blocks with two service aces.
Setters Lexis Akeo and Kylee Levers each had 14 assists for Pitt, while freshman Rachel Fairbanks contributed a career-high eight.
SET ONE: No. 4 Pitt 25, Virginia Tech 15
Pitt used a 7-1 run to gain a 10-4 lead and stayed ahead for the remainder of the set. Back-to-back aces by Fairbanks gave the Panthers a double-figure lead, up 23-13. The frame ended with a kill by middle blocker Anastasia Russ. Lund led Pitt with six kills while the Panthers hit .481 for the set.
SET TWO: No. 4 Pitt 25, Virginia Tech 19
Pitt kept Virginia Tech under 20 points for another frame and gained a 2-0 lead. The Hokies came within three points, still down 15-12 after a 5-1 run. The Panthers gained set point after a 5-1 run of their own (24-17) and allowed two more Hokie points before a Lund kill ended it. Pitt hit .120 for the frame and held the Hokies to a .000 hitting percentage.
SET THREE: No. 4 Pitt 25, Virginia Tech 17
The Panthers completed the sweep, holding Virginia Tech to under 20 points for a third straight set. Pitt hit .355 for the frame while the Hokies hit .304.
