PITTSBURGH—The University of Pittsburgh wrestling team faces its biggest challenge of the season to date when it meets No. 4 NC State on Friday night at Reynolds Coliseum in Raleigh, N.C.
The matchup between the 12th-ranked Panthers (3-0, 1-0 ACC) and Wolfpack (3-0, 1-0 ACC) will be televised on the ACC Network at 6 p.m. as the conference's wrestling dual of the week.
Pitt and NC State both enter Friday's dual with undefeated records overall and in the ACC after the Panthers handled Duke last Saturday, while the Wolfpack defeated Virginia last weekend.
NC State leads the overall and ACC series between the programs, 5-2, although the last two matchups have been won by the away team. Pitt dramatically won in Raleigh, 18-16, in 2019. NC State came to Pittsburgh and won last season, 21-12.
After the Wolfpack narrowly edged Pitt for the ACC Championship last season at the conference tournament held in the Petersen Events Center, Coach Keith Gavin explained to the media this week that his team is well aware of the test that awaits the Panthers on Friday night in Raleigh.
"This will certainly be a tough challenge for our team," Gavin said. "NC State has been the top team in the conference the last couple years. They pretty much have the same team from last season, too. We're certainly excited for that. It's something that our team has been looking forward to."
ACC Network viewers will be treated to several ranked matchups on Friday evening with renowned wrestling commentators Shawn Kenney and Rock Harrison calling the action for national audience.
Pitt enters with five wrestlers ranked in the Top 20 this week by InterMat, led by No. 4 Micky Phillippi at 133 pounds, No. 5 Nino Bonaccorsi at 197 pounds and No. 7 Jake Wentzel at 165 pounds. No. 14 Cole Matthews at 141 and No. 16 Gregg Harvey at 184 round out the Panthers in the rankings.
NC State owns eight ranked athletes in the InterMat standings. Friday's dual could feature as many as four ranked matchups as Phillippi, Matthews, Wentzel and Harvey are slated to meet top opposition.
The ACC Network is available through the following video providers: Altice, AT&T, Charter/Spectrum, Cox Cable, DIRECTV, DISH, Google Fiber, Hulu Live TV, Optimum, Sling, Verizon Fios, Vidgo and YouTube TV, among others. All ACCN games will also be available on the ESPN App to authenticated cable subscribers. Fans interested in learning more about ACCN can visit GetACCN.com.
