Pitt Head Coach to Train 21-Player Roster
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – University of Pittsburgh head coach Dan Fisher will lead the 2020 U.S. Women's Volleyball Junior National Training Team this summer.
"I am beyond honored to once again be part of USA Volleyball and to represent our country," Fisher said. "It is a wonderful opportunity for me to learn from my staff and to be around high-level volleyball."
Fisher is assisted by Krista Vansant (assistant coach at Indiana University) and Jon Newman-Gonchar (head coach at University of New Mexico). TJ Read, director of volleyball operations at UCF, was selected to serve as technical coordinator.
Under Fisher, the U.S. Women's Junior National Team was scheduled to compete in the 2020 NORCECA Women's U20 Continental Championship May 10-17 in Edmonton, Canada. The NORCECA event is a qualifier to the 2021 FIVB Women's U20 World Championship. However, the COVID-19 pandemic prompted the NORCECA event to be postponed without it being rescheduled to date. The WJNTT training period was set for July 4-10 in Colorado Springs, but the continuing impact of COVID-19 has prompted it to be canceled.
When the NORCECA Women's U20 Continental Championship is rescheduled, the Team USA competition roster will come from the 21-player WJNTT roster.
No stranger to the USA Volleyball pipeline, Fisher has coached multiple national programs over the course of his career. Most recently, in 2019, coached Lund as part of the U.S. Collegiate National Team-Anaheim program. He has led two U.S. Women's National Teams to success on the international stage. As head coach of the 2015 U.S Women's National Team, Fisher led the squad to a gold medal at the Pan American Games in Toronto, Ontario, for the first time since 1967. The following year, he coached the team to a bronze-medal finish at the Pan American Cup in the Dominican Republic.
Fisher was an assistant coach and offensive coordinator for Team USA at the Pan American Cup in 2012, helping guide the team to a gold medal finish. On the men's volleyball side, he was an assistant coach for Team USA at the 2007 World University Games in Thailand.
