No. 2 Pitt Aces Test At Boston College

BOSTON, MASS. – No. 2 Pitt recorded a season-high 10 service aces and the Panthers swept aside Boston College 25-15, 25-12, 26-24 Friday night on the road. Pitt improved to 13-0 on the season and 3-0 in ACC play, while Boston College fell to 10-4 and 1-2 in league action.
Haiti Tautua'a had a career-high five aces, including four during an 11-0 Pitt run that stamped victory in the opening set. Pitt rallied from a 23-19 deficit in the third set with a 7-1 run, highlighted by four Olivia Babcock kills down the stretch, for the sweep.
FIRST SET
- Pitt used a 11-0 scoring run, with four aces from Haiti Tautua'a, to break away from a 6-6 tie.
- From there, the Panthers cruised to the 25-15 victory
SECOND SET
- Pitt's service onslaught continued but BC cut an early four-point deficit down to one at 10-9.
- BC stayed within one at 11-10 but Pitt went on a 14-2 run to close out the second set. The Panthers scored the final nine points of the frame.
THIRD SET
- Pitt jumped out to an early 6-2 advantage, but the Boston College block gave the Eagles a lift.
- BC built a 16-13 lead and slowed the Pitt offense temporarily.
- Pitt momentarily tied the score at 18-18 but Boston College scored five of the next six points to build the lead to four at 23-19.
- The Panthers wouldn't go away and scored the next three points on two kills and a block that forced a Boston College timeout.
- Out of the break, Babcock posted her 13th kill of the match to tie the score but Boston College answered to earn a set point at 24-23.
- A service error tied the score once more at 24-24 and Babcock terminated an Izzy Starck pass for the 25-24 lead.
- On match point, Babcock came up with another kill for the 26-24 victory.
NOTABLE
- Haiti Tautua'a finished with a career-high five aces to lead Pitt from the service line. In total, six players had at least one ace with five other Panthers recording one each.
- Olivia Babcock had a team-high 15 kills and hit .364. She added four digs, three blocks and an ace.
- Jordyn Dailey had eight kills on 11 swings from the middle, hitting .727.
- Trinity Thompson had a second consecutive double-digit dig night, posting 11 after having a career-high 14 against Stanford in the team's last match. As a team, Pitt outdug Boston College 42-39.
- Mallorie Meyer and Izzy Starck had eight digs each.
- Pitt hit .273 for the match and held BC to a .129 attack percentage. It snapped a streak of six straight matches in which the Panthers hit at least .300.
- Pitt improves to 41-1 all-time against Boston College and has won 23 straight in the series.
- The Panthers have now won 24 consecutive sets, closing in on last year's season-long 26-set win streak.
- At 13-0, Pitt has tied the 1975 team for the fourth-best unbeaten start to a season in program history.
- Pitt improves to 166-20 (.892) since the start of the 2021 season, the best record in NCAA Division I women's volleyball over that time frame. Pitt is 88-9 (.907) in ACC matches over that time.
- Pitt leads the country with a .328 attack percentage and has hit at least .300 for six straight matches, reaching .400 three times. In total, Pitt has hit at least .300 in 8-of-12 contests
- In breaking the school's single-season kills record a year ago, Olivia Babcock had 212 kills through 13 matches. She has 217 through 13 matches this year.
- Olivia Babcock posted her 174th career ace and now needs one to tie Lindsey Zitzke (175 from 2011-14) for the program record.
- Pitt entered the match ranked No. 3 nationally with 3.08 blocks per set. The Panthers posted 10 in three sets Friday, led by Maaike Heilig with five.
