PITTSBURGH – Despite the cancelation of the 2020 Indoor NCAA Championship meet, the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced on Tuesday afternoon the 2019-20 indoor season recipients of All-American honors. For the first time in his career, junior Greg Lauray earned All-American accolades after his outstanding indoor campaign for the Panthers.
"It's a tremendous honor earning USTFCCCA All-American status and there is no one more deserving than Greg Lauray," expressed head coach Alonzo Webb. "Greg was as determined as ever this year to prove that he was among the elite athletes in the nation in his event and his work ethic and focused proved that. It's unfortunate that he wasn't able to go head-to-head with the best in the high jump at the national competition this season but this will fuel him even more for his senior season in 2020-21."
Lauray becomes the first Pitt male to earn indoor All-American honors in the high jump in program history and is the first male since Andrew Wells (weight throw) in 2016 to earn indoor All-American recognition. He is also just the fifth male individual to earn an All-American nod since the Panthers joined the ACC in 2013-14.
The Nazareth, Pa. native looked poised to make a strong push for a national title in the high jump at the NCAA Indoor Championships after a strong junior campaign. Lauray closed out the 2019-20 indoor campaign tied for ninth in the NCAA in the high jump with a leap that cleared a school record height of 7'3.75" (2.23m).
Lauray capped his third indoor campaign with First Team All-ACC honors in the high jump after a second place finish at the ACC Championships as he posted a final height of 7'0.25" (2.14m). On the year, Lauray claimed a pair of victories while also etching his name at the top of the Pitt record book in the indoor high jump after already holding the school record in the outdoor high jump.
He will enter his senior season for the Panthers as the favorite to claim the ACC indoor title for the second time in his career and as one of the favorites in the NCAA to claim a national championship in the high jump. Lauray ranks fourth in the NCAA among returners for the 2020-21 indoor season with a height of 2.23m.
