Gymnast Returns for Pitt for 2021 Season
PITTSBURGH – Katrina Coca has been granted a sixth year of eligibility by the NCAA, Pitt gymnastics head coach Samantha Snider announced Thursday.
Coca has been cleared to compete for the Panthers during the upcoming 2021 gymnastics season.
"We're excited that Katrina was granted another year of eligibility," Snider said. "She will make an immediate impact in our lineups and help build on last season's success. We're grateful that she was awarded the opportunity to finish her career at Pitt."
Coca joined the Panthers' roster in August 2019 after transferring from the University of Kentucky and was set to compete immediately. However, a leg injury suffered in the fall sidelined her for the 2020 campaign.
"I am extremely grateful to be given the opportunity to compete again," Coca said. "Without this opportunity my career would've been cut short and I wouldn't have been able to compete for this amazing school. Sam [Snider], Ryan [Snider] and Dave [Kuzara] are such great coaches and I know they are going to continue to take this program to a new level. I am just so happy to remain a part of it."
The Stillwater, Okla., native spent her first four collegiate seasons (2016-19) in Lexington, Ky., where she helped the Wildcats reach the program's first NCAA Championship semifinal in 2018. She competed at NCAA Regionals in each of her three active seasons, redshirting the 2019 season due to injury.
As a junior, Coca placed second at the 2018 NCAA Minneapolis Regional with a career high-tying 9.90 on bars. She earned her pinnacle score four times over the course of the season and completed the year ranked as the No. 58 gymnast in the nation on bars with a Regional Qualifying Score (RQS) of 9.870.
"It's a dream come true to continue my career at this school where they have done nothing less than to welcome me, from athletics to academics," Coca said. "The teammates that I've gotten to know this year are so fun to be around. They take care of each other and treat each other like family. As a team, they are driven and want to succeed, and that is so fun to be around. I can't wait to get going again with my team. Hail to Pitt!"
