Pitt Edges Furman, 4-3, in Non-Conference Road Game

GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Pitt softball team defeated Furman, 4-3, at the Pepsi Softball Stadium Tuesday afternoon.
Sophomore Abby Edwards earned the win, throwing 6.2 innings and striking out five and giving up three earned, improving her record to 2-0 on the year. Pitt improved its overall mark to 8-11 on the season, while Furman moved to 7-18 with the loss.
Furman scored the game's first run in the bottom of the fourth off a sacrifice fly from Riley Ludlam.
In the top of the sixth, junior Hunter Levesque singled to center and senior Kaitlyn Kruger singled to right center, sending senior Connor McGaffic to the plate with runners on the corners and one out. McGaffic hit a sharp single to left field, scoring Levesque and tying the game at 1-1. Sophomore Hannah Bach came in as a pinch runner for Kruger and advanced to third.
After McGaffic stole second, senior Alexee Haynes hit a slow roller toward first base. Bach advanced home and beat out the throw, as Haynes earned an RBI fielder's choice to give Pitt a 2-1 lead. Freshman Hope Alley came in as a pinch runner for Haynes, and stole second. Senior Walker Barbee hit the fourth single of the inning for Pitt, this time straight up the middle and bringing in both McGaffic and Alley to increase the Panther lead, 4-1.
Furman added a run (4-2) in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI single to left field from Ludlam. In the bottom of the seventh, Edwards got the first two outs of the inning, but gave up a single and a walk to put the winning run at the plate. Redshirt junior Brittany Knight came into relief, but hit the next two batters as the Paladins scored a run and loaded the bases. Knight struck out the next batter, securing the win and her first save of the season.
Barbee finished 1-for-3 with two RBIs. McGaffic went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run, while Levesque recorded one hit and registered a run.

- Levesque's single in the top of the sixth inning extended her hitting streak to 10 games. The streak dates back to Feb. 22 against UMass.
- McGaffic's single in the sixth inning extended her hitting streak to seven games, dating back to Feb. 28 at North Carolina.
- Pitt stole a season-high four bases. The previous season-high was two against Michigan State on Feb. 14.
