Pitt Drops Midweek Contest at Charlotte

CHARLOTTE – The University of Pittsburgh softball team fell, 11-2, in five innings to Charlotte at the Sue M. Daughtridge Stadium Wednesday afternoon.
Pitt (8-12) opened the game with four straight singles, capped off by senior Alexee Haynes, who singled to right field and brought home junior Hunter Levesque for the game's first run.
Charlotte (14-13) answered with three hits and three runs in the bottom of the first inning and took a 3-1 advantage. Both teams combined for seven hits, four runs and four left on base after the first frame.
The 49ers added three in the second inning off of three hits and led 6-1 after two and added a run in the bottom of the third to lead 7-1.
Pitt hit two singles and drew two walks in the top half of the fourth and scored (7-2) a run off a wild pitch as freshman Hope Alley came across the plate. The Panthers had the bases loaded with two outs, but a strikeout ended the frame.
Charlotte responded in the bottom of the fourth with a leadoff walk and a double from Madelyn Wright, scoring a run (8-2). Charlotte's Cori Henderson hit a three run home run to centerfield, extending the 49er lead 11-2.
Haynes finished 1-for-3 with an RBI. Junior LoLo Sanchez finished 1-for-2 with a walk, while Alley went 1-for-1 with a walk and a run scored. Redshirt junior Brittany Knight struck out four in 6.2 innings, giving up 11 hits and eight earned runs.

- Levesque's single in the first inning extended her hitting streak to 11 games. She has had a hit in every contest since Feb. 22 against UMass.
- Senior Connor McGaffic's single in the first extended her hitting streak to eight games. She has had a hit in every game since Feb. 28 at North Carolina.
