
Panthers Drop Regular Season Finale; Play #10 Notre Dame In ACC Tournament

CORAL GABLES, FL – The Pitt women's basketball team closed out their regular season on Sunday afternoon with a road loss to the Miami Hurricanes, 73-54. With the loss, Pitt will be the #15 seed in the ACC Tournament and they will play #10 Notre Dame on Wednesday afternoon.
Dayshanette Harris continued her scoring tear for the Panthers on Sunday as she netted a game-high 22 points to go along with five rebounds and a steal across 30 minutes of action. For Harris, it marked her fourth 20+ point scoring outing during her freshman season, the most since Brianna Kiesel had seven as a freshman in 2011-12. Amber Brown finished off her afternoon with 14 points and five rebounds while Jahsyni Knight came off the bench and grabbed six rebounds.
Harris got out to a nice start for the Panthers as she made a free throw and a mid-range jumper to give Pitt the early 3-2 lead before the Hurricanes used a 5-0 run to take the 7-3 lead into the first media timeout of the game. Out of the timeout, Harris cut the Hurricanes lead down to two, 10-8 but Miami responded with an 8-0 run to close out the first quarter with the 18-8 lead.
Pitt opened the scoring in the second with a triple from Harris but the Hurricanes answered with a layup to make it 20-11 in favor of the home side. The Panthers were able to go on a 6-0 run over the next four minutes as Ismini Prapa knocked down a triple and Harris netted a highlight reel jumper after a great crossover dribble, cutting the Pitt deficit to three, 20-17. After the media timeout, the Hurricanes took control of the game as they went on a 17-4 run to close out the half with the 37-21 lead.
The third quarter was a back-and-forth affair as the Hurricanes held the slim 11-10 edge in scoring through the first five minutes of play. Brown scored six of the Panthers first 10 points in the quarter as she capped it with a rebound and went coast-to-coast to finish off a layup. The Canes pushed their lead out to 62-36 at the end of the third as they closed the quarter on a 14-5 run.
The Pitt freshmen took over the scoring load in the final quarter on Sunday as Harris, Brown and Emy Hayford scored 11 points in the quarter as Pitt outscored Miami 18-11 in the final frame.
Hayford finished her afternoon with five points, four boards and two steals while Rita Igbokwe finished with six rebounds and three blocks in the loss.
As a team, the Hurricanes outrebounded Pitt 49-39 while forcing 17 Panther turnovers that they turned into 23 points. The Miami bench had a strong game as they finished with 32 points while the Pitt bench had nine points.
