
Panthers Drop Final Game of Series at North Carolina

CHAPEL HILL – The Pitt softball team fell to North Carolina, 9-1 in six innings, at Anderson Stadium Sunday afternoon.
UNC took two of three games this weekend, winning last night's game while Pitt took game one on Friday.
In the first inning, sophomore Katlyn Pavlick led off game with a single, but was thrown out at second after a caught stealing attempt. Junior Hunter Levesque tripled to left field with a ball off the left field wall and senior Kaitlyn Kruger singled to left, bringing Levesque in to give Pitt (6-9, 1-2 ACC) the early 1-0 lead.
North Carolina (8-11, 2-1) tied the game up at one after a slow chopper to second and a throwing error home brought in Abby Settlemyre. The following inning, the Tar Heels took the lead off a solo homerun from Kiersten Licea (2-1) and kept the lead the rest of the game.
The Tar Heels scored in each inning of the game, with one run in innings one through five and four runs in the bottom of the sixth. Down 4-1, Pitt had a chance to close the gap with runners on second and first and one out in the top of the fourth, but two fly outs ended the frame.
Kruger finished 2-for-3 with two singles and an RBI. Senior Walker Barbee went 1-for-2 with a single and a walk, while Levesque went 1-for-3 with a triple and a run scored.
Redshirt junior Brittany Knight pitched 3.0 innings, allowing six hits and two earned runs with a strikeout. The loss moved Knight's record to 5-4 on the year.
The Panthers totaled nine hits opposed to North Carolina's 12, while Pitt left six runners on base.
Pitt next travels to Clemson, S.C. to take on Clemson in a three-game ACC series beginning Friday, March 6 at 2 p.m. All games will be broadcasted on the ACCNX.
