
Senior Panthers Shine Against West Virginia

Burton, Petrikis Earn Individual Titles
PITTSBURGH – The Pitt gymnastics team (5-5, 2-3 EAGL) fell short to rival West Virginia (7-6, 0-2 Big 12) by less than half a point, 194.925-194.575, on Senior Night at Fitzgerald Field House Friday.
With the win, the Mountaineers evened up the season series, 1-1, as Pitt claimed the first meeting at the George Washington quad meet Jan. 31. The teams will meet again for the rubber match Sunday, March 1 in Morgantown.
The Panthers honored senior competitors Michaela Burton, Rachel Dugan, Deven Herbine and Alecia Petrikis, as well as Lucy Jones, Hallie Peele and Megan Tripp.
Despite the team loss, two senior Panthers earned individual wins. Burton earned a season-high 9.900 on uneven bars and a 9.850 on balance beam, and Petrikis won floor exercise for the second consecutive meet, scoring 9.850.
VAULT
Petrikis placed second on vault with a 9.775, runner-up to a 9.900 score by Abbie Pierson of West Virginia. Junior Haley Brechwald had the next-highest score for Pitt with a 9.725, placing fourth. Overall, Pitt had a slow start with a score of 48.475.
BARS
Burton earned her sixth bars crown out of seven meets with a season-best score of 9.900. Freshman Ciara Ward also contributed a season-high of 9.825, placing second. Pitt's two-event score was 96.875, following a 48.400 team score on bars.
BEAM
Burton continued to perform well, winning the next event with a 9.850, marking her fourth beam victory of the year. Sophomore Kiley Robatin earned third place with a 9.775. The Panthers totaled 48.825 for the rotation to bring their three-event score to 145.700.
FLOOR
Petrikis repeated as the floor champion, after winning in the Panthers' tri-meet Feb. 15. She posted a 9.850 to claim the victory. Sophomore Olivia Miller was next with a 9.800. The Panthers closed out the meet with their best team score of the day, 48.875, to total 194.575 for the day.
UP NEXT
The Panthers will fly to Cedar City, Utah, to take on No. 19 Southern Utah at 9 p.m. ET Monday, Feb. 24.
