Fisher Signs ETSU Libero Transfer to 2020 Roster
PITTSBURGH – Two-time Southern Conference Libero of the Year Marija "Popche" Popovic will transfer from East Tennessee State to join the Pitt volleyball team in 2020, head coach Dan Fisher announced Monday.
"Popche will certainly make Pitt volleyball stronger," Fisher said. "Anytime you can bring in a player with her resume there's reason to be excited. She has been one of the best players in the SoCon for the last three years and she is excited to finish her career at Pitt. She spent last summer playing for the Serbian national team and understands the game at the highest level. Popche will make Pitt volleyball better."
A 5-foot-5 rising senior, Popovic led her team to the SoCon Tournament championship match in each of her three seasons, winning the title in 2017. With the Belgrade, Serbia, native anchoring the back row, the Bucs made two NCAA Tournament appearances (2017, 2018).
Popovic earned All-SoCon first team honors twice (2018, 2019) and was tabbed the league's Freshman of the Year and Libero of the Year in 2017. She repeated as Libero of the Year the following season in 2018.
Her sophomore and junior campaigns register as the No. 3 and No. 4 seasons in ETSU history, respectively, in terms of digs per set. She posted 5.18 digs per frame in 2018 and followed that performance with 4.46 digs per set this past year. She surpassed the 1,500-dig threshold for her career in November 2019.
