Batesole’s Walk-Off Single Lifts Panthers Past Spartans, 3-2

CLEMSON, S.C. – Junior Morgan Batesole's two out, seventh inning single drove in freshman Hope Alley to lift the University of Pittsburgh softball team over Michigan State, 3-2, in the first day of the ACC/B1G Challenge.
Down 2-1 entering the final frame, seniors Kaitlyn Kruger and Walker Barbee each grounded out to second base, leaving senior Connor McGaffic to start a two out rally. McGaffic did just that, doubling to centerfield to put the tying run on.
With sophomore Hannah Bach pinch running for McGaffic, Alley came up to the plate, ultimately hitting a sharp groundball down the third base line. Hitting off the third baseman's glove, the ball rolled toward the fence in left field, bringing in Bach to tie the game at two. Alley advanced to second, setting up Batesole for walk-off finish.
"What a great team win tonight," said head coach Jodi Hermanek. "Top of the order got us on the board early and the bottom of the line-up clutched up for the win in three at-bats.
Junior Brittany Knight recorded a career-high nine strikeouts in a complete-game effort. Knight gave up four hits, one earned run and five walks, while the victory improved her record to 3-1 on the year.
"Very impressed with Brittany [Knight] tonight," Hermanek said. "Her command and presence was an absolute in the circle and she pitched to deserve that win."
Michigan State (0-5) recorded its two runs in the top of the fourth, as Courtney Callahan hit a two run double to right center. In the bottom of the sixth, junior LoLo Sanchez earned her third RBI of the season with a sacrifice fly to left, bringing in Batesole.
Batesole finished with two hits, including a triple, one run and one RBI. Junior Hunter Levesque went 2-for-3 with two singles on the evening. Pitt improved to 3-3 on the season with the win.
The Panthers compete in a twin bill tomorrow, facing Maryland at 10 a.m. and Michigan State at 3:30 p.m.
