Senior Picks Up Fourth Bars Title
PITTSBURGH – For the second time this season, Pitt senior Michaela Burton has been named the East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) Gymnast of the Week, as announced Tuesday.
Burton last earned the honor following the first week of 2020 competition, on Jan. 14. The Downers, Grove, Ill., native is the first Pitt gymnast to earn multiple honors in a season since Lindsay Offutt received the accolades three times in 2016. Burton is one of five Panthers ever to earn the honor, along with Offutt, Tracey Pearson (2016), Alicia Talucci (2009, 2010) and Alix Croop (2009).
Burton picked up her fourth uneven bars title with a season high-tying score of 9.850 against NC State Saturday. The senior has won the event at four of the Panthers' five meets so far this season. Against the Wolfpack, she led Pitt on every event in which she competed: on bars (9.850), balance beam (9.875) and floor exercise (9.875 – career high). She currently leads the EAGL on bars with an average score of 9.840, ranking 50th in the nation.
Up next, the Panthers will remain in Pittsburgh to host a tri-meet featuring Towson and Yale Saturday, Feb. 15, at 2 p.m. at Fitzgerald Field House. Tickets are available at PittsburghPanthers.com or by calling the Panthers Ticket Office at 800-643-PITT (7488).
