PITTSBURGH – The Pitt women's cross country team dropped a home dual meet to the West Virginia Mountaineers on Friday night at the Youthtowne cross country course in Clinton, Pa.
"We knew West Virginia was going to be a tough team but I thought we had some people really step up today," said cross country coach Brad Herbster. "Ally (Brunton) looked good today on this tough hilly course and having three freshmen inside our top-5 mix today was a really important sign for good things to come from that group. Lily (Robertson) also competed hard all the way through and I'm really excited about the performance overall."
West Virginia posted a team score of 18 as they notched the top-two times while the Panthers had a team score of 43 as they had two runners finish inside the top-10 on Friday.
Leading the way for the Panthers on Friday was senior Ally Brunton who crossed the finish line in third place with a new 5K personal record time of 18:32.3. Brunton was strong throughout the race and knocked over two minutes off of her time from the intrasquad meet on the same course a couple weeks back. Sophomore Lily Robertson finished close behind as she took home seventh place with a 5K personal record of her own, crossing the finish line in 19:11.2.
A trio of freshmen also scored for the Panthers as Sadie Carey-Tharp had an impressive collegiate debut with an 11th place in 19:29.5. Emily Brown also impressed in her Pitt debut as she notched a 12th place finish 19:42.3 while Olivia Zambrio came in 13th place in 19:43.3.
Caelan Miller made her season debut with a strong 15th place finish in 19:52.6 while Reagan Flannery, Veronica Sanchez, Megan Nagy and Emily Bonaventure all notched top-20 finishes for the Panthers.
The Panthers will now have a week off to train for their final meet of the fall season as they head down to Cary, NC to compete in the 2020 ACC Cross Country Championships on Friday, October 30 at the WakeMed Soccer Field.
