Panthers, Orange Play to 1-1 Draw in Double Overtime
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The University of Pittsburgh men's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw after a double overtime effort Friday night at the SU Soccer Stadium in conference play.
With the tie, the Panthers move to 3-3-2 over and 1-1-1 in ACC play. Syracuse moves to 3-2-4 overall and is now 0-1-2 against conference foes.
"We earned a very difficult point on the road tonight at Syracuse," said head coach Jay Vidovich. "I'm proud of the resiliency we demonstrated when down a goal. Our goal was an intelligent and skillful play starting with Valentin [Noel] and [Edward] Kizza connecting, and Kizza providing the final pass to Veljko [Petkovic]. My disappointment is that after dictating the game and going up a man, we were unable to finish on several of the quality opportunities that we created. This match showed us the work that we need to do to become a stronger team."
Freshman Veljko Petkovic found the back of the net for third time this season and attempted a team-high four shots through 110 minutes of play.
Senior Arie Ammann had another solid performance in goal tonight, making a season-high nine saves.
The shooting attempts were nearly level, with Syracuse owning a slight 17-16 advantage and 10-9 with shots on goal.
Syracuse struck first in the 18th minute after a cross from the right side into the box for a header that got past Ammann in goal.
The Panthers responded in the 37th minute thanks to Petkovic. The freshman received a pass from junior Edward Kizza after he worked his way around Orange defenders in the box. Petkovic received the ball in the middle and buried the ball to the left corner of the goal.
Pitt gained an advantage in the 51st minute at SU's Luther Archimede was issued his second yellow card of the night to put the Orange a man down for the remainder of the match.
Neither teams were able to find the back of the net in the remainder of regulation, forcing overtime.
The playing field was evened in the 94th minute after Petkovic received his second yellow card, forcing both teams to play a man down.
Syracuse attempted three shots through the first 10 minutes of overtime, but were unsuccessful in finding the back of the net. The Orange attempted three more in the second overtime, while Pitt had one look.
