Panthers Drop 2-0 Contest to Top-Ranked Demon Deacons
PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh men's soccer team dropped a 2-0 contest to No. 1 Wake Forest Friday night at Ambrose Urbanic Field.
In a physical match that saw 20 total fouls and six total yellow cards, goals by Wake Forest in the 34th and 53rd minute led to the eventual Demon Deacon win.
"I think it was a bit of a boxing match in the beginning," said head coach Jay Vidovich. "It was absorbing blows and trying to get what we could. I thought we started finding our way in the game and then were punished for a mistake. We couldn't handle the overload off a quick corner and they found the open man with a good goal there.
"We rebounded a little bit into the half and then just had a poor start to the second half. Wake Forest put us on our heels really quickly and came out with a goal. After that that we did a tremendous job. It's always easier to play when you're down, but I thought we did a good job with possession."
Wake Forest went on the attack in the first half, controlling most of possession through the first 45 minutes. The Demon Deacons found their first goal of the game in the 34th minute, scoring off a header from the middle of the box.
Following a quick score by Wake Forest to start the second half, Pitt started to find a rhythm offensively, but was unable to catch the Demon Deacons on the scoreboard. The Panthers finished the second half of play with advantages in shots (6-3) and corners (8-5), but four saves by Wake Forest's goalkeeper kept Pitt from finding the back of the net.
Junior Edward Kizza led the team with three shots, followed by sophomore Rodrigo Almeida with two. Juniors Alexander Dexter and Sito Sena and freshmen Josh Hesson and Arturo Ordonez each added one shot apiece in the matchup.
In goal, redshirt junior Arie Ammann collected two saves while allowing two goals in 90 minutes of action.
Up next, the Panthers will close out their homestand with a match against Akron 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 16 at Ambrose Urbanic Field.
