No. 12 Pitt Volleyball Sweeps Vikings for First 2019 Win

Three Panthers Post Double-Figure Kills
PITTSBURGH – Three Panthers recorded double-figure kills as the No. 12 Pitt volleyball team swept Cleveland State for its first win of the 2019 season at Fitzgerald Field House.
Senior middle blocker Layne Van Buskirk (11), junior outside Kayla Lund (11) and redshirt senior outside Stephanie Williams (10) led the Panthers in the kill column. Lund hit a team-high .625 on the day, with just one error on 16 attempts. Van Buskirk added five blocks to lead Pitt.
Making their Pitt debuts, freshman setter Lexis Akeo and redshirt senior libero Hali Hillegas paced the Panthers with 31 assists and 20 digs, respectively.
Collectively, the Panthers out-hit the Vikings (.324-.148), more than doubling Cleveland State's kill output (51-24). Pitt had more assists (45-23) and digs (48-37), but CSU had the upper hand in blocks (10.0-6.0).
Set One: No. 12 Pitt 25, Cleveland State 14
Pitt cruised to a victory in the first set, handily defeating the Vikings 25-14. The Panthers hit a whopping .542 for the frame while holding CSU to just .150 from the field. Lund and Williams had four kills apiece to lead Pitt.
Set Two: No. 12 Pitt 25, Cleveland State 19
A 7-0 scoring run put Pitt into its largest lead of 16-7, and the Panthers did not look back, winning 25-19. Van Buskirk had five kills in the frame while senior right side Nika Markovic picked up five digs. Pitt's defense held the Vikings to a match-low .138 hitting percentage for the set.
Set Three: No. 12 Pitt 25, Cleveland State 22
The Panthers sealed the deal with a 25-22 win in the third. Redshirt freshman Natalie Steibel saw the court for the first time in her collegiate career, where she contributed two kills. Junior utility hitter Chinaza Ndee led Pitt with six kills in the frame, hitting .308.
UP NEXT
No. 12 Pitt will take on Cincinnati at 7 p.m. Friday at Fitzgerald Field House. Saturday the Panthers will complete the Panther Challenge with a match against South Carolina at 7 p.m.
