
No. 12 Pitt Volleyball Sweeps Again, Defeating Bearcats

PITTSBURGH – The No. 12 Pitt volleyball team (2-0) posted its second consecutive sweep to start the 2019 season, topping Cincinnati (1-1) in straight sets (25-18, 25-13, 25-16) Friday night at Fitzgerald Field House.
For the second consecutive match, Pitt's outside hitters recorded double-figures in the scoring column as junior Kayla Lund and redshirt senior Stephanie Williams posted 10 kills apiece. Senior middle blocker Layne Van Buskirk was close behind with nine kills, hitting at a .615 clip. Classmate Nika Markovic tallied a near double-double with eight kills on the right side and 11 digs.
Freshman setter Lexis Akeo posted an impressive 32 assists and went 3-of-3 in the attack column.
Pitt limited U.S. Women's National Team member Jordan Thompson to just nine kills on .250 hitting, after she posted 20 against South Carolina earlier in the day.
As a team, the Panthers hit .419 on the day while holding Cincinnati to .179. Pitt had the advantage across the board, including kills (44-26), assists (40-23), service aces (8-3), digs (37-24) and blocks (3.0-2.0).
Set One: No. 12 Pitt 25, Cincinnati 18
A 7-0 run that included back-to-back aces by Markovic gave the Panthers a commanding 9-2 lead. Later, a 5-0 run put Pitt in front, 15-7, before cruising to a 25-18 win. Van Buskirk and Williams each tallied four kills, while Markovic and Lund had three apiece. The Panthers hit .433 in the first frame while holding the Bearcats to .222.
Set Two: No. 12 Pitt 25, Cincinnati 13
Pitt made quick work of the Bearcats in the second frame, sparked by a 5-0 run which led to a 11-5 lead. The Panthers never looked back, keeping the lead for the remainder of the set. Pitt had its best hitting percentage of the day, with 12 kills and just one error on 23 attempts to post .478.
Set Three: No. 12 Pitt 25, Cincinnati 16
An 11-2 run late in the third set sealed the deal for Pitt as the Panthers reached a double-figure lead of 21-11. The Panthers were able to hold off Cincinnati and secure their second consecutive win of the season.

No. 12 Pitt will complete the Panther Challenge with a match against South Carolina at 7 p.m. Saturday at Fitzgerald Field House.
