Three-Time NCAA Regional Competitor to Join Panthers
PITTSBURGH – Kentucky transfer Katrina Coca will join the University of Pittsburgh gymnastics team for the upcoming 2020 season, head coach Samantha Snider announced Saturday.
"We are excited to add Katrina [Coca] to our team this fall," Snider said. "She is an outstanding athlete whose competitive excellence and high-level experience will make an immediate impact on our program. We look forward to her competing on multiple events this year."
Coca arrives in Pittsburgh with one year of eligibility remaining after redshirting the 2019 season due to injury. In 2018, she helped the Wildcats reach the program's first NCAA Championship semifinal, where she competed on bars.
The Stillwater, Okla., native has competed at NCAA Regionals in each of her three active seasons. As a junior, Coca placed second at the 2018 NCAA Minneapolis Regional with a career high-tying 9.90 on bars. She earned her pinnacle score four times over the course of the season and completed the year ranked as the No. 58 gymnast in the nation on bars with a Regional Qualifying Score (RQS) of 9.870.
"I chose to come to Pitt because immediately when I met the coaches, the team and the academic staff I felt a very friendly and family-like connection between them all," Coca said. "I wanted to be a part of that family and that connection."
A kinesiology major, Coca is a three-time member of the Southeastern Conference (SEC) Winter Sports Honor Roll.
"I am excited to be able to compete for Pitt because the program is on the rise and I feel that I can contribute to the program's growth. I am also excited for Pittsburgh's city environment. I come from a smaller town in Oklahoma so I am excited to get to experience the many parts of the city, its cultural diversity, and – of course – all the delicious food!"
