Smith, Corcoran Wrap Up Summer in Cape Cod League
Panthers' Pitchers Finish Collegiate Season
PITTSBURGH – University of Pittsburgh pitchers Chase Smith and Billy Corcoran have called it a summer as they wrapped up their seasons at the prestigious Cape Cod League.
Smith, who pitched for the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox, carried over his success on the mound from his spring season to the Cape. Appearing in five games for the Red Sox, the righty boasted a 1.22 ERA and struck out seven batters in 7.1 innings of work while allowing just four hits. Smith's success on the mound translated to the team, as Yarmouth-Dennis sat in second place at the time of his departure in the East Division with a record of 14-9-1 and, only two points behind the division-leading Chatham Anglers.
"Playing on the Cape this summer gave me an experience I'll remember for the rest of my life," said Smith. "You get to play with and against some of the best players across the country and that was a great opportunity for me to learn from that. I experienced successes and failures at one of the highest levels of college baseball and that taught me a lot about the game and had the chance to work with a great coaching staff and meeting teammates and friends I will remember throughout my career."
The Marietta, Ga., native picked up two wins during his time on the Cape, picking up his first win against the Falmouth Commodores on June 23, going 2.2 innings and striking out two while allowing no hits. In his last game at the Cape, he went 2.2 innings again, striking out two to pick up his second win with the Red Sox.
Taking the mound for the Hyannis Harbor Hawks, Corcoran started one game and appeared in two others. The rising sophomore racked up eight strikeouts and allowed 13 hits in 10.1 innings to garner a 4.35 ERA. Corcoran was a vital part of the pitching staff for Hyannis this summer, as the righty picked up two of the team's five wins on the season.
"It was a great opportunity for me to be able to play with and against some of the best players from around the country," said Corcoran. "I really do believe the Cape taught me a lot about the game itself and the work ethic it takes for even the best players to have success in this game. I'm very thankful to have had an opportunity that not everybody else gets."
In his last appearance of the summer, Corcoran went 5.0 innings, striking out four to pick up his first victory of the summer and lead the Harbor Hawks to a 4-2 victory over the Bourne Braves on June 30. Picking up his second victory in Hyannis' 10-4 win over Falmouth on June 26, the Milmont Park, Pa., native went 3.0 innings, allowing only two hits and striking out a pair.
While the two pitchers return home to get ready for the upcoming season, outfielder Kyle Hess remains at the Cape, playing for the Bourne Braves.
