Pitt Splits Saturday Doubleheader against Oregon and Missouri
COLUMBIA, Mo. – The University of Pittsburgh softball team earned a one-run victory over Missouri while splitting its doubleheader in day two of the Mizzou Tournament.
The Panthers dropped their first contest of the day to Oregon, 9-1, before earning a nail-biting 5-4 win over the Tigers in their second matchup of the weekend.
"I am very proud of our team for coming back victorious over Missouri in game two today," said head coach Jodi Hermanek. "I asked our team to play with pride and execution and they delivered just that. I was so impressed with Abby [Edwards] for her gutsy pitching performance – striking out big hitters in big moments – and the clutch hitting of Hunter [Levesque], Alexis [Solak] and Gabby [Fredericks] was exactly what we needed to keep the momentum on our side. This team showed such resiliency today, and I am extremely proud of the guts and grit they displayed."
Pitt utilized two pitchers against Oregon in redshirt sophomore Brittany Knight and freshman Abby Edwards. The duo combined to allow eight earned runs while striking out a pair in four innings of work.
The Panthers lone hit in the matchup came from junior Walker Barbee, who used a double to send in Pitt's only run of the contest.
Pitt picked up its play in game two against Missouri, fighting back from an early deficit to come out with the 5-4 victory.
Two Panther pitchers saw the mound, with senior Taylor Rahach earning the start and Edwards coming in to make her second appearance of the day. Edwards entered the game in the second frame, earning the win after allowing just one earned run and striking out four in 5.2 innings of action.
Offensively, Pitt collected nine hits from five different players. Sophomore Hunter Levesque led the way with a 3-for-4 showing, adding three runs, two RBI and a long ball in the contest. Senior Gabrielle Fredericks posted a 2-for-3 effort to go along with a walk and two-run homer, while senior Alexis Solak rounded out the multi-hit group with a 2-for-4 performance at the plate, adding a double and RBI. Senior Olivia Gray and junior Kaitlyn Kruger also contributed one hit apiece in the matchup.
