Pitt Drops Series Finale to Notre Dame
PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh softball team fell in its series finale, 5-1, to Notre Dame Monday afternoon at Vartabedian Field.
The Panthers dropped their three contests against the Fighting Irish, but closed out the series with back-to-back highly competitive games.
"I'm proud of the fight our team showed in this series," said head coach Jodi Hermanek. "That's a very good Notre Dame team offensively, defensively and on the mound. I thought we did a great job each inning of putting pressure on them, and up and down the lineup we had opportunities to score. That's all you can ask for. We have to just continue to believe in ourselves and believe in the opportunity that we can come out here next weekend and win all three."
Pitt deployed three pitchers on the mound in senior Sarah Dawson, redshirt sophomore Brittany Knight and freshman Abby Edwards. The trio combined to allow five earned runs in seven innings of action.
Offensively, the Panthers produced six hits at the plate. Junior Walker Barbee led the way with a 2-for-3 effort, while sophomore Hunter Levesque added a 2-for-4 performance. Seniors Gabrielle Fredericks and Alexis Solak also added one hit apiece in the matchup.
SCORING SUMMARY
Both teams were scoreless through the first two innings before the Fighting Irish used an RBI-single with runners on to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the third.
Notre Dame tacked on two more in the fourth frame, using two RBI-singles to make it 3-0.
The Fighting Irish added another run in the fifth, using a solo shot to put the score at 4-0.
The Panthers scored their first run of the game in the bottom of the frame, scoring off an infield error to make it 4-1.
Notre Dame would add its last run of the contest in the sixth, taking a 5-1 lead and the eventual win.
UP NEXT
The Panthers will travel to Huntington, W.Va., to face Marshall in their last road game of the regular season 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 1.
