Pitt Earns Wednesday Win over Thundering Herd
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The University of Pittsburgh softball team picked up a 7-3 victory over Marshall Wednesday afternoon at Dot Hicks Field.
Junior Alexee Haynes, a native of nearby Charleston, W.Va., had a strong showing in front of her hometown crowd, going 2-for-4 with three RBI and a first at-bat home run.
"At first it was really nerve-wracking," said Haynes of playing in front of a hometown crowd. "But, I think once the adrenaline kicked in it was just like 'you know what, these people love you so much, you're in your hometown and nothing could be any better.' I was just living in the moment."
The Panthers deployed four pitchers on the mound in seniors Sarah Dawson and Taylor Rahach, redshirt sophomore Brittany Knight and freshman Abby Edwards. The quartet combined to allow just six hits and three runs while striking out three in seven innings of work.
Offensively, Pitt racked up an impressive 13 hits from 10 different players. Haynes, senior Alexis Solak and freshman Sarah Seamans each posted two hits on the day, while seniors Olivia Gray, Taylor Myers and Nava Susi, juniors Walker Barbee, Kaitlyn Kruger and Connor McGaffic and sophomore Chandler Walter each added one hit apiece.
SCORING SUMMARY
Pitt jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning via Haynes' long ball to left field.
The Panthers put the score at 3-0 in the second frame, with Haynes recording her third RBI of the game.
Marshall answered in the bottom of the inning, scoring three runs to even the contest.
Pitt continued its offensive surge in the third frame, with Kruger blasting a two-run shot over the left field wall to help the Panthers regain their lead.
Both teams went scoreless through the next three innings before Solak used a two-RBI single to put the score at 7-3 and give the Panthers the eventual win.
UP NEXT
The Panthers will host Boston College for their last series of the regular season beginning Friday, May 3 at Vartabedian Field.
