Costly Fifth Inning Leads to Game Two Loss
PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh softball team fell to Notre Dame, 5-2, in game two of its series Sunday night at Vartabedian Field.
The Panthers held a 2-1 lead going into the fifth frame before the Fighting Irish used a four-run inning to take the lead and eventual win, capping off the frame with a three-run long ball.
"I thought we came out with really sharp intensity," said head coach Jodi Hermanek. "Starting off with a first inning at-bat with Olivia [Gray] going yard on them, I thought that set the pace and the tone for us. I thought we played some aggressive defense. I thought Brittany [Knight] settled in well after the first inning. It was just one pitch that changed the situation. I think we need to continue that attack tomorrow."
Redshirt sophomore Brittany Knight earned the start for the Panthers, allowing five runs (four earned) while striking out one in 4.1 innings of action. Freshman Abby Edwards entered the game in relief of Knight, throwing 2.2 innings of scoreless ball while allowing just two hits and striking out one.
Pitt produced four hits at the plate, with seniors Olivia Gray and Alexis Solak, junior Connor McGaffic and sophomore Hunter Levesque each collecting one hit apiece, including a solo shot by Gray.
SCORING SUMMARY
Pitt opened the scoring in the first frame, with Gray hitting a leadoff long ball to start things off. The Panthers then made it 2-0 following an RBI-single by Solak.
The Fighting Irish scored their first run of the game in the fourth inning, using a squeeze bunt to make it 2-1.
Notre Dame would go on to take the lead in the fifth frame, scoring four runs off of an infield error and three-run homer to put the score at 5-2 and give the Fighting Irish the eventual win.
UP NEXT
The Panthers will close out their series against Notre Dame 3 p.m. Monday, April 29 at Vartabedian Field.
