Panthers Fall Short in Opener against Fighting Irish
PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh softball team dropped its series opener, 12-2, to Notre Dame Saturday afternoon at Vartabedian Field.
"We have to come out here and have that will to win and be on top of our A game on all sides of the ball defensively, offensively and pitching wise," said head coach Jodi Hermanek on the mindset heading into tomorrow. "We have to have to come out here on demand - that's what I told the kids. You get out there and you have to win tomorrow. You have to execute offensively, defensively and be better in the circle."
On the mound, the Panthers deployed two pitchers in senior Sarah Dawson and freshman Abby Edwards. The duo combined to allow 12 earned runs while striking out four in seven innings of action.
Pitt collected six hits and three walks at the plate, but closed out the contest with 10 runners left on base. Junior Alexee Haynes led the team with a 2-for-4 performance, while senior Taylor Myers, junior Connor McGaffic and sophomores Morgan Batesole and Hunter Levesque each added one hit apiece.
SCORING SUMMARY
Notre Dame opened the scoring in the first frame, using an RBI-single and RBI-double to take an early 2-0 lead.
The Panthers answered back in the bottom of the inning, with Haynes using an RBI-single to left field to score Levesque from third.
The Fighting Irish kept their bats going in the second frame, adding two more runs to make it 4-1.
Notre Dame tacked on three more in the fourth frame, using a solo shot and two-run homer to put the score at 7-1.
Pitt scored a run of its own in the bottom of the inning, scoring off a bases-loaded infield error.
Both teams went scoreless in the next two innings before the Fighting Irish used a five-run seventh frame to put the score at 12-2 and earn the eventual win.
