Track & Field Heads To Charlottesville For Virginia Challenge This Weekend

PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh track and field teams will be traveling to Charlottesville, VA this weekend to compete against 52 teams in the Virginia Challenge. The two-day meet will begin on Friday and run through Saturday at Lannigan Field on the campus of the Cavaliers.

PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh track and field teams will be traveling to Charlottesville, VA this weekend to compete against 52 teams in the Virginia Challenge. The two-day meet will begin on Friday and run through Saturday at Lannigan Field on the campus of the Cavaliers.

- Updates will be provided on the Pitt track and field twitter account for the duration of the meet. You can follow us @Pitt_TF_XC for all the updates.
- The Virginia Challenge will feature some of the top schools in the country, with a total of 52 schools competing in the event.
- There will be a total of seven ACC schools participating in this weekend's Virginia Challenge including the host Cavaliers. The other ACC programs competing are NC State, Notre Dame, Pitt, Syracuse, North Carolina and Wake Forest.
- The meet will open up on Friday with the women's Javelin at 11:00 AM and the men's 3000m steeplechase.
- Friday's track events will begin at 1:30 PM with the women's 100m and will end with the men's 5000m Invitational at 9:15 PM.
- Friday's field events will begin at 11:00 with women's Javelin and will conclude at 8:00 PM with the men's shot put invitational.
- Saturday's track events will begin at 12:00 PM with the men's 1500m and will conclude at 8:45 PM with the women's 5000m Invitational.
- Saturday's field events are set to begin at 10:30 AM with the men's discus and will finish with the women's hammer invitational at 8:15 PM.
LAST TIME OUT – AT TENNESSEE RELAYS/BISON OUTDOOR CLASSIC
- A group of Panthers competed in Knoxville, TN, while another group of Panthers traveled to Lewisburg, PA to compete in the Bison Outdoor Classic. The Panthers saw five top-10 times for the weekend and two victories as Daveon Finley won the 110m hurdles and Tyler Rollins won the 5000M unseeded event at the Bison Outdoor Classic.
- Sydni Townsend collected a second place finish in the 400m hurdles at the Tennessee Relays with a time of 58.89 seconds, which was a personal best and the fourth fastest time in program history for the Panthers.
- Freshman Crockett Schooler led the Panthers with a third place finish in the 400m hurdles, crossing the line in 53.11 seconds, while also producing a personal best time of 13.40 in the 110m hurdles at the Tennessee Relays.
- In the women's 100m dash, Jaylyn Aminu (11.79) posted a personal best run while Danielle Leaks (11.87) posted a new season best run.
- The women's 4x400m relay quartet of Sydni Townsend, Nina Crawford, Aysha Muhammad, and Nikki Scherer put up the seventh fastest time in program history, posting a time of 3:38.19, while the men's team posted a season-best time of 3:13.14.
- The Panthers 1600m sprint relay team of Eddita Pessima, Flora Ahiarakwe, Alexis Leech, and Monica McNeil had a strong showing as they finished with a time of 4:10.36 and a second place finish.
- In the women's mile run, the Panthers saw three runners finish inside the top-10 led by senior Makenzie Zeh who took home third place with a season-best time of 4:59.90. Mikaela Vlasic finished right behind Zeh in fourth place with a personal best time of 5:01.74, while Emily Bonaventure placed ninth with a personal best time of 5:10.39.
- Miranda Salvo notched a 13th place finishin the 1500m run in 4:26.67, while Ally Brunton crossed the line right behind Salvo in 4:27.46, the seventh best time in the event in program history. Devon Hoernlein also notched a personal best finish of 4:40.25 in the event. Salvo also posted an eighth place finish in the 800m with a time of 2:12.34 while fellow Panthers Ally Brunton and Emily Burd posted personal best times of 2:13.91 and 2:18.15, respectively.
- In the men's 1500m run, Nate Sloan posted an impressive eighth place finish in 3:46.13, the seventh fastest time in the ACC this season.
- Sophomore Breanna Phillips had a pair of strong showings in the 400m hurdles and high jump. Phillips posted a fourth place finish with a season-best time of 1:02.65 in the 400m hurdles, while she also posting a personal best jump with a height of 1.61m (5'3.25"), the ninth best leap in program history.
- Greg Lauray took home second place in the high jump as he cleared a height of 2.04m (6'8.25) while Cobe Wiggins produced a personal best leap of 6.46m in the long jump for Pitt.
- Pitt will return to the track to compete in two separate meets, the Penn Relays in Philadelphia, PA and the Jesse Owens Invitational. The Penn Relays will be from Thursday, April 25 until Saturday, April 27, while the Jesse Owens Invitational will start on Friday, April 26th and conclude on Saturday, April 27th.
