Pitt Drops Doubleheader to Yellow Jackets
ATLANTA, Ga. – The University of Pittsburgh softball team dropped its doubleheader to Georgia Tech Saturday afternoon at Mewborn Field.
The Panthers dropped a back-and-forth battle to the Yellow Jackets, 6-4, in game one before falling in game two by a score of 18-9.
Freshman Abby Edwards earned the start in game one for Pitt, allowing four earned runs while striking out four in 4.2 innings of action. Senior Taylor Rahach entered the game in the fifth inning, surrendering two earned runs while striking out a batter in 1.1 innings of play.
The Panthers produced eight hits at the plate, led by senior Taylor Myers, who went 2-for-2 while adding an RBI and run. Seniors Gabrielle Fredericks, Olivia Gray and Alexis Solak, junior Alexee Haynes and sophomores Morgan Batesole and Brie Horrell each added one hit apiece in the contest.
Pitt deployed a trio of pitchers for game two in Edwards, Rahach and sophomore walk-on Jess Eldridge. The group went on to allow 14 earned runs while striking out a pair in 5.1 innings of work.
Offensively, the Panthers racked up a staggering five home runs and 15 hits. Sophomore Hunter Levesque led the squad with a perfect 4-for-4 performance, adding three RBI and two home runs. Junior Connor McGaffic recorded a 3-for-4 showing, while Haynes and junior Walker Barbee rounded out the multi-hit group with two apiece, with Barbee recording her first Panther home run. Batesole, Fredericks, Gray and Myers each contributed one hit each, with Batesole and Gray also collecting one long ball apiece in the contest.
SCORING SUMMARY – GAME ONE
Pitt opened the scoring in game one, with Fredericks roping a single to left center to plate Batesole from third.
Georgia Tech tied the contest in the fourth, sending a solo shot over the left field wall to put the game at 1-1.
The Panthers regained their lead in the fifth frame, with Gray scoring Batesole after sending a ball through the middle of the infield.
The Yellow Jackets answered in the bottom of the inning, scoring three runs to take a 4-2 advantage.
Pitt cut into Georgia Tech's lead in the top of the sixth, with Myers scoring from third in a rundown situation following a throwing error by the catcher.
The Yellow Jackets again answered in the bottom of the frame, adding two runs off a solo shot and RBI-single to take a 6-3 lead.
The Panthers added one more run in the final frame off an RBI-single by Myers, making it 6-4, but ultimately couldn't find enough offense to catch Georgia Tech.

It took just one at-bat for Pitt to get on the board in the backend its doubleheader, with Gray blasting a leadoff long ball over the left field wall. In the next at-bat, Levesque gave the Panthers back-to-back long balls and a quick 2-0 lead.
Pitt kept its bats going in the second inning, with Barbee cranking her first career Panther home run to put the game at 3-0. Batesole then gave Pitt back-to-back home runs in back-to-back innings with a long ball over the left field wall.
The Panthers weren't done there, with Levesque blasting a two-run bomb for her second home run of the game, giving Pitt a 6-0 run advantage. The Panthers would score three more runs in the second frame off of an RBI-single by Myers and two-RBI single by Barbee, with Pitt going all the way through its lineup in the second frame.
Georgia Tech scored its first runs of the game in the bottom of the inning, using a two-run long ball to put the score at 9-2.
The Yellow Jackets got back into the game in the fourth, using a six-run inning to make it 9-8 in favor of Pitt.
Georgia Tech then took the lead in the fifth frame, using a five-run inning to earn a 13-9 advantage.
The Yellow Jackets would then earn the run-rule victory in the sixth, using a five-run inning to take the 18-9 win.
