Offense Stays Hot in Series Defeat
Pitt dropped the opening game 20-8, falling in a tightly contested second game, 7-6. The Panthers took the first game of the series Friday evening in an 8-3 victory.
"I'm really pleased with the offensive performance we put together all week," said head coach Mike Bell. "We moved some guys around, slotting [Connor] Perry down a little bit, getting some pressure off of him and [David] Yanni a little bit. Guys that continue to have quality at bats, [Nico] Popa and [Bryce] O'Farrell, stepped forward and [Sky] Duff had a great weekend, but that is what we really pressed on, quality at bats, building an inning. We had some opportunities to get some guys in motion."
Game One
The Panthers took an early lead in the first game, jumping out to a 3-0 advantage in the second inning. A bases loaded walk to Gregory Ryan Jr. would put up the first run of the game, as the Panthers would go up 3-0 on a single from Sky Duff into left center.
The Demon Deacons cut the lead to one in the third, but Pitt would respond with a run in the bottom of the frame to regain the two-run advantage.
Wake Forest got hot in the fourth, taking its first lead of the game with a four-run frame. Pitt would get one back in the bottom of the inning off a single from Kyle Hess to pull within one of the Demon Deacon lead.
The visiting team would continue to pile on the runs in the fifth, scoring a pair to take an 8-6 lead. The Panthers would again pull within one in the bottom of the inning, as a double off the bat of David Yanni scored one and a single to left from Duff plated another.
In the seventh, Wake Forest would add to its advantage, scoring five to take a commanding 13-7 lead. Six runs in the eighth would make it 19-7 in favor of the visitors.
Pitt used a solo homer off the bat of Nico Popa to score its eighth run of the game, but a solo shot from the Demon Deacons in the ninth secured the victory for Wake Forest.
Dan Hammer (2-4) earned the loss in a 3.2 inning performance as Chris Gomez tossed 2.2 innings of relief. David Moore, Mason Ronan, Jack Hogan and Lucas Maldonado also saw work out of the pen.
Offensively, Duff led the way, going 4-4 with three RBI and a run scored. Popa wrapped up the afternoon 2-5 with an RBI and two runs scored, as Pitt tallied 12 hits on the afternoon.
Game Two
Wake Forest struck early in the second game, using a six-run second inning to take a commanding lead.
A three-run homer from Yanni in the bottom of the second cut the lead in half and an RBI double from Connor Perry pulled Pitt within two in the bottom of the third.
Wake Forest would take a 7-4 lead in the fourth off a solo homer, but a two-run double off the bat of Bryce O'Farrell in the sixth kept hope alive, pulling Pitt within one.
The Panthers made it exciting in the ninth as Ron Washington Jr. singled up the middle with one out. A deep fly ball on the edge of the warning track by Hess was gloved by the Wake Forest center fielder, and a fly ball into right field ended things.
Billy Corcoran (1-4) earned the loss, going 5.0 innings, allowing five earned runs off nine hits and two walks, striking out four. Senior William Kirwan was solid in relief, letting up just one hit and striking out a pair.
The Panthers return to action Tuesday at home, hosting Youngstown State in a 3 p.m. tilt.
