Panthers Drop Series Opener to Georgia Tech

Costly Fifth Inning Leads to Pitt Defeat
ATLANTA, Ga. – The University of Pittsburgh softball team dropped it series opener to Georgia Tech, 5-2, Friday afternoon at Mewborn Field.
The Panthers took the lead in the fourth frame following a leadoff solo shot by sophomore Hunter Levesque before the Yellow Jackets used a five-run fifth inning to earn the eventual win.
Freshman Abby Edwards started on the rubber for Pitt, allowing just one earned run (five runs total) while striking out one in 4.2 innings of action. Senior Taylor Rahach entered the game in relief of Edwards, throwing 1.1 innings of scoreless ball.
Offensively, the Panthers produced five hits at the plate. Levesque led the team with a 2-for-2 showing, adding two runs, an RBI and a walk to go along with her solo shot. Seniors Gabrielle Fredericks and Alexis Solak and junior Kaitlyn Kruger each added one hit apiece in the contest.
SCORING SUMMARY
Pitt got on the board first, with Levesque using a solo shot in the fourth frame to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead.
Georgia Tech jumped out ahead in the fifth inning, using a leadoff long ball to tie the game before an infield error eventually lead to four unearned runs, giving the Yellow Jackets a 5-1 advantage.
The Panthers added their second run of the contest in the sixth, with Solak using a single to center field to score Levesque, but ultimately couldn't find enough offense to catch the Yellow Jackets.

The Panthers will play a doubleheader against Georgia Tech beginning 1 p.m. Saturday, April 13 at Mewborn Field.
