Panthers Fall to Cavaliers in First ACC Contest of Season
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Pittsburgh softball team dropped its Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) opener to Virginia, 7-4, Saturday afternoon at The Park in Charlottesville, Va.
Redshirt sophomore Brittany Knight earned the start on the rubber for Pitt, allowing seven earned runs while striking out three in 4.2 innings of action. Freshman Abby Edwards came in to relieve Knight in the fifth, striking out two in 1.1 innings of scoreless work.
Five different Panthers collected hits on the day. Junior Connor McGaffic went 1-for-1 in the game, recording an RBI-double in her lone pinch-hit appearance. Sophomore Hunter Levesque and freshman Katlyn Pavlick both went 1-for-2 in the game, with Pavlick collecting two walks and Levesque adding one. Senior Gabrielle Fredericks and junior Alexee Haynes each contributed 1-for-3 efforts in the matchup.
SCORING SUMMARY
Pitt opened up the scoring in the first frame. Pavlick earned a leadoff walk to start things off before stealing second base. Levesque then sent a ball to third, scoring Pavlick after a throwing error to first base.
The Cavaliers immediately answered, evening the score in the bottom of the inning. With a runner on third, a sac fly to center field gave Virginia its first run of the game and tied the contest at one apiece.
Virginia later used a leadoff solo shot to left field in the fourth frame to take a 2-1 lead.
The Panthers evened the score in the top of the fifth, with an RBI-double to center field by McGaffic scoring freshman Sarah Seamans from second.
The Cavaliers then used a two-out rally in the bottom of the fifth to separate themselves from Pitt. Virginia scored all five of its runs with two down in the frame, using a bases-loaded double to score two before a triple to right center sent home two more. The Cavaliers then used an RBI-single to put the score at 7-2.
Pitt made it interesting in the final frame, scoring two in the seventh. Pavlick roped a one-out double to left center to get the Panthers bats going. Following a walk by Levesque, a single to right field by Haynes loaded the bases. Sophomore Chandler Walter then hit into a fielder's choice at second, with a throwing error leading to two runs and putting the score at 7-4. The Panthers were unable to keep their offensive momentum going from there, with their comeback attempt ultimately falling short.
