Panthers Drop Two Contests to Cavaliers via Walk-Offs
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Pittsburgh softball team dropped two nail-biters to Virginia to close out its first Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) series of the season Sunday afternoon at The Park in Charlottesville, Va.
The Panthers [3-18, 0-3 ACC] dropped both games by one run, falling to the Cavaliers [11-9, 3-0 ACC] by a score of 7-6 in game one and 5-4 in game two.
"It never feels good to come out on the short end of a conference series, especially when we had two great opportunities to come out on top and just couldn't close the door in the seventh inning," said head coach Jodi Hermanek. "However, I'm going to lay my eyes on the positives – the fact that this ball club has found itself in a winning position in three of the last four games. Now we just need to learn how to slam the door shut.
"I'm confident that we'll get there. We're now putting ourselves in a place to win, and we will find the fight to finish."
Freshman Abby Edwards started in the circle for Pitt in game one of its doubleheader, allowing five earned runs while striking out one in 3.2 innings of work. Senior Taylor Rahach entered the game in relief of Edwards in the fourth frame, allowing one earned run while striking out one in 1.2 innings of action. Redshirt sophomore Brittany Knight came in to close things out for the Panthers, allowing one run (unearned) in her 1.1 innings of play.
Offensively, the Panthers saw seven hits from four different players. Freshman Katlyn Pavlick led the way with a 2-for-3 effort, adding a home run and walk. Sophomore Morgan Batesole went 2-for-3 in the contest while collecting a run. Junior Alexee Haynes posted a 2-for-4 showing at the plate while adding an RBI, with sophomore Hunter Levesque rounding out the group with a 1-for-2 effort to go along with three RBIs, two walks and one run.
In game two, Knight started on the mound for Pitt, going the distance against the Cavaliers. The Windham, Ohio, native surrendered five runs (three earned) in the matchup.
At the plate, the Panthers recorded six hits. Senior Gabrielle Fredericks posted a 2-for-2 showing while adding two walks and a long ball. Batesole, Haynes, Pavlick and freshman Hannah Bach each collected one hit in the contest, with Pavlick recording her second home run in as many games.
SCORING SUMMARY – GAME ONE
Virginia got on the board first, using a solo shot to left center in the bottom of the first frame to take a 1-0 lead.
Pitt answered in the top of the second, collecting three runs in the inning. With the bases loaded, Levesque used a double to left center to clear the bases and give the Panthers a 3-1 advantage.
The Cavaliers used two more solo shots in the second and third inning to tie the contest at three apiece.
The Panthers regained their lead in the fourth frame, adding another three runs. Pavlick sent a rocket over the center field wall to make it 4-3, with an RBI-single by Haynes and an RBI by Fredericks later making it 6-3.
Virginia then added two more in the fourth inning and another in the sixth to tie the game at 6-6.
With a runner on first in the final frame, the Cavaliers used a single to right field followed by an error to send home its seventh run of the game and end the contest.
