Perry, Washington Jr. Homer as Pitt Drops Series
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Pittsburgh baseball team dropped the second game of a weekend series at ACC Coastal Division foe Virginia Saturday afternoon, as the Cavaliers captured the series with a 7-5 decision at Davenport Field in Charlottesville, Va.
"I was really pleased with the fight and quality at bats that we showed through the first five innings of the game," said head coach Mike Bell. "When you have a chance like we had in the sixth, you have to take advantage and extend the lead. When you don't, good teams like Virginia will take advantage of any miscues you have, and make you pay for it. That's what they [Virginia] did a great job of in the final innings, they put the ball in play with two strikes and we didn't take care of the baseball."
The Panthers found themselves in an early hole, as a two-run second inning from the Cavalier offense gave the home team the advantage. Pitt would fight back, as a solo homer off the bat of Connor Perry cut the lead to one in the third. The long ball was the third of the series for Perry.
The Panthers used a two-run fifth inning to take their first lead of the game. A leadoff walk to Perry got things going, as a wild pitch would put the senior in scoring position. After a pair of outs, an error in left field allowed David Yanni to reach, scoring Perry and tying the game. A single through the right side by Nico Popa would plate Yanni, as Pitt jumped out to a 3-2 advantage.
The two teams would exchange runs in the sixth, as the Panthers took a one-run lead through six.
Errors would plague the Panthers in the final three frames, as Virginia was able to tie it up in the seventh and take the lead in the eighth with a three-run inning.
Pitt would keep things alive in the ninth as Ron Washington Jr. laced a one-out homer to left field, but the Panthers couldn't catch up as Virginia held on for the win.
Junior Dan Hammer tossed an effective 4.2 innings of work, allowing two runs and striking out six. Sophomore Chase Smith (1-1) threw 3.1 innings allowing five runs (one earned), tallying one strikeout.
Offensively, Perry put together another strong performance, going 2-3 with two RBI, two runs scored and a pair of walks. Washington Jr. and Popa both went 1-5 with an RBI, as the Panthers tallied eight hits on the afternoon.
