Panthers Fall to Colonels and Rebels in First Day of Ole Miss Classic
OXFORD, Miss. – The University of Pittsburgh softball team dropped two contests on day one of the Ole Miss Classic, falling to Nicholls State, 5-0, and Ole Miss, 6-1, Friday afternoon at the Ole Miss Softball Complex in Oxford, Miss.
Redshirt sophomore Brittany Knight started in the circle for Pitt in game one, allowing eight hits and five earned runs while striking out three in seven innings of work.
Offensively, the Panthers struggled at the plate, collecting just two hits in the contest. Senior Gabrielle Fredericks and junior Alexee Haynes both went 1-for-3 on the day, tallying both of Pitt's hits.
The Panthers utilized three pitchers in game two. Freshman Abby Edwards earned the start, allowing two earned runs through 2.2 innings of action. Senior Taylor Rahach came in to relieve Edwards, surrendering three earned runs while striking out one in 2.2 innings. Knight entered the game to close things out, striking out one while not allowing a hit in 0.2 innings of work.
Pitt produced eight hits at the plate, but wasn't able to string enough together to match the Rebels output. Sophomore Morgan Batesole led the Panthers offensively, going 3-for-3 while adding an RBI. Senior Alexis Solak added a 2-for-3 effort, with Haynes, junior Walker Barbee and sophomore Chandler Walter each collecting one hit apiece.
SCORING SUMMARY – GAME ONE
Nicholls State scored its first run of the game in the opening frame, using an RBI-single to score a runner from third.
Following the early score, a defensive battle ensued, with both teams going scoreless through the next four innings.
The Colonels ramped up their offensive production in the sixth frame, collecting three runs in the inning. Nicholls State's first run came off of a solo shot to right center, with a two-run long ball to left center later making it 4-0.
The Colonels added their last run of the contest in the seventh inning, using another solo shot to make it 5-0.
SCORING SUMMARY – GAME TWO
Both teams were at a stalemate through two innings of action before Ole Miss opened up the scoring in the third frame. The Rebels used a two-RBI triple and an RBI-double to close out the inning with a 3-0 lead.
Ole Miss added three more runs in the sixth. Following a leadoff triple, a single down the line made it 4-0. A single to the right side with runners on later scored two more, pushing the Rebels' lead to 6-0.
The Panthers added their first run of the contest in the final frame, with Batesole sending a ball to right field to score senior Taylor Myers from third, but Solak was then thrown out on the play trying to advance home, ending the game.
