Panthers Fall to Purdue and College of Charleston
The Panthers went eight innings against Purdue in their season opener, but eventually fell to the Boilermakers, 13-9.
Pitt then dropped its matchup to College of Charleston by a score of 10-4.
Though the Panthers didn't yield the results they were looking for in their opening day, Pitt did see flashes from some of their players.
Sophomore Brie Horrell earned the start behind the plate against College of Charleston while batting 2-for-2 overall on the day and adding a run and RBI. Sophomore transfer Chandler Walter had an impressive debut for her new team, going 3-for-6 while collecting two doubles, a run and an RBI. Junior Connor McGaffic went 1-for-2 at the plate, cranking a three-run shot over the wall in left center against Purdue, while fellow junior Alexee Haynes contributed a 2-for-5 showing in the batter's box while adding a run of her own.
In the circle, freshman Abby Edwards appeared in both contests while allowing just one earned run in 4.1 innings. Senior Sarah Dawson made the start in Pitt's opener against Purdue, allowing one run while striking out three in 2.2 innings of work, but had to leave the game after a hard shot up the middle of the field deflected off of her.
SCORING SUMMARY – GAME ONE
Freshman Katlyn Pavlick opened up the game in dramatic fashion for Pitt's offense, roping a leadoff home run over the center field wall in her first career at-bat.
With Purdue runners on first and second in the top of the third, a hard hit ball up the middle deflected off of Dawson, sending the ball into right field and scoring a Boilermaker runner, which evened the score at one apiece.
Purdue added two more runs in the top of the fourth, using a hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded and a sac fly to take a 3-1 lead.
In the top of the fifth, Purdue used a leadoff triple followed by a double to center field to send in its fourth run of the contest.
With runners on first and second with two down in the bottom of the fifth, senior Gabrielle Fredericks dropped a ball in between Purdue's shortstop and left fielder, sending in two runs after a throwing error by the left fielder and putting the score at 4-3.
The Boilermakers responded in the top of the sixth, scoring on a fielder's choice following a leadoff triple before adding another run off of a sac fly to take a 6-3 lead.
Pitt continued to fight back in the contest, evening the score at six apiece in the bottom of the sixth after McGaffic's long ball scored three.
Neither team was able to produce a run in the seventh frame, sending the game to extra innings.
Purdue's offense started rolling in the eighth inning, where they added seven runs to take a 13-6 lead.
The Panthers continued their comeback attempt, adding three runs of their own in the final frame, but ultimately came up short.
SCORING SUMMARY – GAME TWO
A leadoff single in the bottom of the fourth by the Cougars eventually led to the first run of the contest, with a single to right field later in the inning sending the runner home and giving College of Charleston a 1-0 advantage. The Cougars ramped up their scoring efforts from there, adding four more runs in the inning to take a 5-0 advantage.
Similar to game one, Pitt fought back into the contest, scoring four runs of their own in the top of the sixth. The Panthers looked to have a chance to even the score following a single by senior Alexis Solak through the left side of the field, but Pavlick was thrown out at the plate while trying to advance home, leaving the score at 5-4.
The Cougars immediately answered back in the bottom of the inning, adding five more runs to put the game out of reach.
