Haynes Collects Two RBIs in Victory against Nittany Lions
ORLANDO, Fla. – Redshirt sophomore Brittany Knight threw a complete-game shutout en route to the University of Pittsburgh softball team earning a 2-0 victory against in-state rival Penn State Sunday morning at the UCF Softball Complex.
The win marked Pitt's first at the UCF Knights Classic, with the Panthers previously falling to Coastal Carolina and UCF two times apiece on Friday and Saturday.
"I'm assured that the last two games are pivotal turning points for us," said head coach Jodi Hermanek. "We had fun on the field, competed hard and gained confidence in the team that we've known we are. The past two games saw great pitching performances, with Abby [Edwards] and Brittany [Knight] carrying us the distance, and those outings are crucial for our pitching staff.
"I'm proud of our team win today against Penn State. We saw great defensive efforts, timely offense and a solid pitching performance by Brittany. Now it's time to carry that forward into next week."
In her seven-inning scoreless effort, Knight allowed just four hits and one walk while striking out four in the contest, earning her second win of the season.
Offensively, junior Alexee Haynes led the Panthers at the plate, going 1-for-1 with a walk while collecting both of Pitt's RBIs in the game. Senior Marissa DeMatteo added a 1-for-1 outing in the batter's box, while junior Walker Barbee and sophomore Chandler Walter both went 1-for-3 on the day.
SCORING SUMMARY
Both teams were scoreless through two innings before Pitt collected its first run of the contest in the third frame. Freshman Katlyn Pavlick opened up the inning with a leadoff walk, with an RBI-triple to right field by Haynes later sending her home to give the Panthers a 1-0 advantage.
Pitt added a slight cushion in the fifth frame, collecting another run to take a 2-0 lead. Sophomore Morgan Batesole led off the inning by reaching first following an infield error. Pavlick then earned her second walk of the day to put runners on first and second. Senior Alexis Solak advanced both runners with a groundout to short, before Haynes collected her second RBI of the day with a sac fly to right field.
Knight continued her dominant performance on the mound from there, leading the Panthers to victory.
