TALLAHASSEE, FL – The University of Pittsburgh women's basketball team (10-17, 1-12 ACC) fell to #21 Florida State on Sunday afternoon inside the Donald L. Tucker Civic Center by the score of 78-46 in head coach Lance White's first game back in Tallahassee after being a Seminole assistant coach for 15 seasons.
"It was really weird today standing across the court from Coach Sue," said head coach Lance White. "But it was also really fun to see a lot of the kids that I coached at Florida State perform at the highest level. There were a lot of bittersweet moments today but it was fun to be back."
The Seminoles got off to a great start on Sunday as they were able to score the first eight points of the game to force a Pitt timeout. Out of the timeout, the Panthers began to settle in as they scored the next four behind a jumper from Danielle Garven and a layup by Cara Judkins. The Noles responded with nine straight before Jasmine Whitney connected on a jumper off the glass and a three-pointer to cut the Pitt deficit to 10, 19-9. Whitney closed out the scoring for the Panthers with a floater in the lane as the teams went to the second quarter with Florida State leading 28-14.
Florida State came out strong again in the second quarter as they opened the frame on a 12-5 run to take the 40-19 lead. The Seminoles were able to win the quarter 12-7 as Judkins finished with three in the quarter and Ismini Prapa came off the bench and buried a jumper to send the game to half with the home squad leading 40-21.
The two sides exchanged buckets early in the third as Garven connect on a pair of buckets for the Panthers but the Seminoles used a 5-0 run into the media timeout to extend their lead out to 49-25 midway through the quarter. Both sides played strong defensively in the third as the Seminoles took the 52-28 lead into the final quarter after a Jahsyni Knight free throw ended the scoring for Pitt.
The Panthers opened the final quarter with five quick points as Garven finished off a layup and Judkins netted a layup and free throw to cut the FSU lead to 54-33 early on in the final frame. Pitt wasn't able to get any closer down the stretch of the game as they fell on the road to the Seminoles, 76-46.
Garven led the Panthers in scoring for the fourth straight game as she finished the game with 14 points and three rebounds across 33 minutes of work. Judkins finished off her strong game down low with eight points and a team-high eight boards while Whitney finished with eight points, three assists and three steals across 36 minutes.
For the game, the Seminoles outrebounded the Panthers 44-29 while also turning 14 offensive rebounds into 12 points. Florida State also converted 17 Pitt turnovers into 24 points while shooting 49.1% from the floor in the game.
