Panthers Fall to Wisconsin and Nebraska
RALEIGH, N.C. – The University of Pittsburgh softball team dropped both of its matchups during the opening day of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge in Raleigh, N.C.
Pitt fell to Wisconsin, 8-0, in its first game before dropping a 14-1 five-inning contest to Nebraska.
Redshirt sophomore Brittany Knight earned the start in game one against the Badgers, striking out a career-high eight batters in seven innings of work while allowing nine hits and eight runs.
At the plate, three Panthers recorded hits. Sophomore Morgan Batesole went 1-for-1 in the matchup, recording a single in the seventh inning, while seniors Olivia Gray and Alexis Solak both went 1-for-3 in the contest.
Senior Taylor Rahach started game two on the rubber for Pitt, allowing five earned runs in 1.2 innings before being relieved by freshman Abby Edwards. Edwards went on to throw 3.1 innings in the contest, allowing eight earned runs.
Offensively, Batesole recorded the Panthers lone hit of the game, eventually scoring off of a sac fly RBI by senior Nava Susi.
SCORING SUMMARY – GAME ONE
After a scoreless first inning, Wisconsin broke open the game with six runs in the second frame. The Badgers led off the inning with three consecutive base hits, leading to their first run of the contest. A fielder's choice to first then sent home Wisconsin's second run. An error later in the inning scored two more before a two-RBI long ball to right field made it 6-0.
The Badgers would go on to add two more runs in the game, coming in the fourth and seventh inning, to earn the 8-0 victory.
SCORING SUMMARY – GAME TWO
Nebraska got its bats going early, collecting two runs in the opening frame. A bases-loaded wild pitch made it 1-0, with the Huskers adding another run later in the inning following a throwing error after a rundown ensued between third and home.
In the second inning, Nebraska added four more runs, scoring off an infield single to the shortstop with runners on second and third before a three-RBI long ball to left center made it 6-0.
The Huskers added three more runs in the third frame. A bases-loaded single marked Nebraska's first run of the inning, with a bases-loaded fielder's choice followed by a bases-loaded groundout to the pitcher eventually making it 9-0.
The Huskers continued their offensive explosion in the fifth inning, adding a run off of an RBI-single before a grand slam to left center made it 14-0.
