Panthers Set For Clash With North Carolina On Thursday

PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh women's basketball team (9-16, 0-11 ACC) will welcome the North Carolina Tar Heels to the Petersen Events Center on Valentine's Day for an ACC showdown at 7:00 pm.

- The Panthers will be looking to improve to 4-0 against North Carolina inside the Petersen Events Center on Thursday night.
- For the first time in school history, the Panthers have faced four top-12 programs through their first seven conference games. Overall, Pitt has played five ranked teams on the year and own the 19th hardest schedule in the country.
- The Panthers goal offensively is 60 points scored as they own an 8-0 record this season when they score 60+ and a 1-16 record when not doing so.
- The Panthers (9-16, 0-11 ACC) came out strong but a poor shooting second quarter cost them the game as #25 Miami handed Pitt the 65-51 loss on Sunday afternoon in the 12th annual Pink The Petersen game.
- The Panthers only produced two points in the second quarter while being held to just 26.7% shooting for the game in the loss.
- Senior Danielle Garven led the Panthers in scoring for the second straight game as she netted 13 points and six rebounds across 29 minutes of action.
- Junior point guard Jasmine Whitney had a great all-around effort in the loss as she netted nine points, a season-high eight rebounds, six assists and two steals in 28 minutes.
- As a team, the Panthers were outscored 30-18 inside the paint while also being outrebounded 49-38 in the loss.
- The North Carolina Tar Heels enter Thursday night's game with a 15-10 overall record and a 6-5 ACC mark. The Tar Heels have won five of their last six including a 70-64 victory on the road against Clemson on Sunday.
- The Tar Heels are being led offensively by Janelle Bailey who is averaging 16.8 points and 8.9 rebounds while connecting on 46.8% of her field goals. Paris Kea ranks second on the team averaging 16.2 points, 3.1 rebounds and 2.0 steals so far this season.
- Stephanie Watts has started all 25 games and is averaging 15.8 points, 5.6 rebounds and 1.9 steals while connecting on a team-high 79 three-pointers. Shayla Bennett is averaging 10.2 points, a team-best 3.9 assists and 3.3 rebounds.
- As a team, North Carolina ranks fifth in the ACC in scoring (75.6 ppg) while ranking 14th in scoring defense as they are allowing 69.5 points/game. The Tar Heels shoot the ball well at the free throw line (75.3%) which ranks third in the ACC and they also rank fourth in turnover margin (+2.4).
- The Tar Heels are coached by one of the most iconic women's basketball head coaches in history, Sylvia Hatchell. The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Famer has posted over 1,000 career head coaching victories across her prestigious career. She has accumulated a career record of 1,020-400 and a 748-320 record at UNC.
- Pitt will hit the road for their next three games as they travel to Tallahassee on Sunday afternoon for a clash with the Seminoles at 2:00 pm. The Panthers will then travel to Syracuse on Thursday, Feb. 21 and Wake Forest on Thursday, Feb. 28 to close out their road schedule.
- After the three-game road swing, the Panthers will return home for their regular season and home finale as Louisville comes to the Pete for a 2:00 pm game on Sunday, Mar. 3. The game against the Cardinal will also be the Panthers Senior Day.
