Pitt Begins Conference Play on the Road
PITTSBURGH – Heading into her second season with the University of Pittsburgh softball team, head coach Jodi Hermanek announces the Panthers' 2020 Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) spring schedule.
The Pitt softball team is returning to the field after a 7-17 ACC record in 2019, winning two out of their eight series. The Panthers finished the 2019 season 13-41 overall.
"This year is a big year for us to turn over a new leaf and really take a stance in the ACC," Hermanek said. "We scheduled a lot of road games to prepare ourselves for the level of difficulty within our conference. As a team we are excited for a break in the travel during April to come out and see our community support us at home."
The conference schedule features 24 games in total made up of eight series. Pitt will participate in 12 road matchups and host 12 contests at Vartabedian Field in the Petersen Sports Complex.
The 2020 squad will open up conference play in Chapel Hill, N.C., with a three-game series against the Tarheels (Feb. 28-March 1). Last year the Panthers fell to North Carolina, two games to one. The Tarheels wrapped up the 2019 season with a 17-7 mark in conference play.
The following weekend, Pitt heads to Clemson to take on the Tigers in a three-game series (March 6-8). Clemson will debut their first NCAA Division I softball team in program history this spring, with head coach John Rittman at the helm.
The Panthers will host their first home ACC contest of the 2020 season against Duke (March 20-22). Last time the two faced off, the Blue Devils won the series two games to one. Duke completed its 2019 season 25-31 overall, recording an 11-13 mark in conference play.
Pitt will then host NC State at Vartabedian Field (March 2-19). The Wolfpack finished 9-15 in the conference and 31-27 overall in the 2019 season. Pitt owns a 10-8 all-time series lead over the Wolfpack, last meeting in 2017.
The Panthers will then head to Louisville, Ky., to take on the Cardinals (April 3-5). Louisville ended the 2019 season 35-23 overall, going 12-12 in the ACC. The Panthers last faced off against the Cardinals in 2018 in Pittsburgh, where the Panthers won two games.
Pitt will then return home to face off against Virginia (April 9-11). Last season, the Panthers opened their conference play against the Cavaliers in Charlottesville, with Virginia sweeping the series. The Cavaliers finished the 2019 season 22-31 overall and 8-16 in ACC play.
For Pitt's final ACC road matchup, the Panthers will travel to Notre Dame, Ind. (April 17-19). The Fighting Irish won all three games in the series a year ago. Notre Dame was eliminated in the 2019 ACC tournament by Florida State, and ended its season in the NCAA regionals with a loss against Wisconsin. The Fighting Irish recorded a 37-18 mark overall, earning an 18-6 record in ACC play.
The Panthers will conclude ACC play at home, hosting Georgia Tech (May 1-3). The Yellow Jackets defeated the Panthers in the 2019 series, winning all three games. Georgia Tech finished 31-27 overall, 11-13 ACC. The Yellow Jackets advanced to the ACC Championship Quarterfinal, where they were eliminated by then-ranked No. 5/6 Florida State.
This season the Panthers return 13 players from their spring 2019 roster in seniors Walker Barbee, Alexee Haynes, Kaitlyn Kruger and Connor McGaffic, redshirt junior Brittany Knight, juniors Morgan Batesole, Brie Horrell, Hunter Levesque and Chandler Walter and sophomores Hannah Bach, Abby Edwards, Katlyn Pavlick and Sarah Seamans.
Pitt also welcomes seven newcomers to the fold in junior LoLo Sanchez, redshirt sophomore Jada Crittendon and freshmen Hope Alley, Kayla Lane, Taegen Lewellen, Becca Miller and Makenzie Stiles. Sanchez joins the Panthers after spending the past two seasons at Mercer, while Crittendon comes to the team following two years at fellow ACC school, Virginia Tech.
