PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh women's basketball team (2-3, 0-0 ACC) dropped a Saturday afternoon non-conference game inside the Petersen Events Center to crosstown rival Duquesne in their 38th meeting of all-time, 81-62.
"I am obviously disappointed, I hate losing any game but this one means a little more," said second-year head coach Lance White. "I thought Duquesne played great, their kids made some big shots and out-hustled us to every loose ball. I thought we had some good performances starting with Cara Judkins, especially on the defensive end and rebounding, I thought that was pretty much as good as she can play and I was very pleased with her effort the whole game."
Dayshanette Harris had her strongest offensive game of her young career on Saturday as she finished off her afternoon with a career-high 22 points to go along with five rebounds and two steals across 30 minutes of action. Amber Brown continued her strong play for Pitt down low as she netted a career-high 14 points and five rebounds while Judkins finished her game with eight points and a career-high 13 rebounds, four offensive. Gabbie Green played a career-high 32 minutes and finished with seven points and a career-high 10 rebounds in the loss.
The first quarter was a back-and-forth affair as the Panthers opened the scoring with a Harris jumper before the Dukes got out to the 8-6 lead at the first media timeout. Out of the timeout, Aysia Bugg knocked down a triple and Jahsyni Knight drained a deep jumper to cut the Pitt deficit to two, 13-11, but the Dukes closed out the quarter with a buzzer beater to take the 20-17 lead into the second.
The second quarter proved to be the turning point in the game for the Dukes as they were able to outscore the Panthers 20-11 in the quarter to take the 40-28 lead into the locker room. The Dukes opened the second on a 10-4 run to force a Pitt timeout. The Panthers had a quick 5-0 run as Harris made a free throw and a fast break layup midway through the quarter to cut their deficit to six, 32-26, but the Dukes closed out the quarter on an 8-2 run to take the 12-point lead through 20 minutes.
The three-point shot was the difference in the third quarter as the Dukes drilled four triples and didn't allow the Panthers to get any closer than 10 in the quarter. Back-to-back three-pointers from Duquesne midway through the quarter ballooned the lead to 20, 59-39, and the Dukes never looked back.
Three straight free throws from Harris cut the Pitt deficit to 12 just over a minute into the final quarter but the Dukes were too much as they went on to collect the 19-point road victory.
For the game, the Panthers were held to just 37.9% shooting from the floor and 16.7% from behind the arc while the Dukes shot 47.2% for the game overall and 34.6% from three. The Dukes turned 19 Pitt turnovers into 24 points and their bench outscored the Panthers 31-4 for the game.
Duquesne was led offensively by Amaya Hamilton who netted 17 points and six rebounds while Amanda Kalin finished off her strong afternoon with 16 points, three rebounds and three assists.
