Panthers Keep Rolling, Defeating Wake Forest
PITTSBURGH – The No. 2 Pitt volleyball team (22-1, 11-0) picked up its program-record seventh consecutive sweep of an ACC opponent, defeating Wake Forest (11-11, 1-10) Friday night at Fitzgerald Field House.
Pitt downed the Demon Deacons by scores of 25-12, 25-11, 25-20.
Redshirt senior outside hitter Stephanie Williams had a match-high nine kills to go along with three service aces. She was one of five Panthers to record five or more kills, including junior right side Chinaza Ndee (seven), sophomore middle blocker Sabrina Starks (seven), senior middle blocker Layne Van Buskirk (five) and redshirt junior outside Zoi Faki (five).
Starks posted a match-high six blocks. Redshirt senior libero Hali Hillegas picked up a match-high nine digs while freshman setter Lexis Akeo produced 25 assists.
Pitt held Wake Forest to .014 success hitting while the Panthers posted a .320 clip. Pitt had the advantage across the board, in kills (37-19) assists (34-19), service aces (6-1), digs (35-22) and blocks (7.5-4.0).

After an 0-3 start, Pitt took off on a 5-0 run and did not surrender the lead for the remainder of the frame. A 9-1 run extended the Panthers' advantage to 15-6, and finished the set with a double-figure margin, 25-12. Pitt hit .406 for the set while holding the Demon Deacons to .037. Williams led the Panthers with six kills in the set.
Set Two: No. 2 Pitt 25, Wake Forest 11
Pitt cruised out to a 9-1 start and kept its momentum rolling. A 9-3 run put the Panthers up, 20-8, and held the Deacons off for another double-figure victory, 25-11. Williams and Starks had three kills apiece in the frame to lead the Panthers as Pitt hit .389 as a team. Wake Forest hit -.125.
Set Three: No. 2 Pitt 25, Wake Forest 20
The Panthers took an 11-8 lead after a 6-1 run, and pushed their advantage to 17-13 after a 4-0 run. The Demon Deacons fought for their closest margin of the match but still fell by five, 25-20. Faki had four of her five kills in the final frame.

- The Panthers tied their best start to an ACC season in program history, improving to 11-0. Pitt started the 2018 ACC season at 11-0 before falling at Duke on Oct. 28, 2018 (3-1).
- Pitt earned its 31st consecutive victory when playing at Fitzgerald Field House. The Panthers' 30 wins in a row at the facility are a school record. Pitt's last loss at the Field House came Oct. 22, 2017, against NC State (3-1).
- Pitt's record improved to 8-1 all-time against Wake Forest and 4-0 when playing in Pittsburgh.
- The Panthers' winning streak against the Demon Deacons extended to four matches. Pitt's last (and only) loss to Wake Forest came Oct. 9, 2016, in Winston-Salem, N.C.
- The Panthers' record improved to 39-2 when ranked inside the AVCA top 10 and 12-1 when ranked inside the top five.
SWEEP CITY
- Dating back to an Oct. 11 win at Syracuse, Pitt has swept its last seven ACC opponents, marking the longest ACC sweep streak in program history.
- At 11-0 in ACC play, the Panthers have won 33 out of 34 sets played, with the lone dropped frame coming at then-ranked No. 23 Florida State (Oct. 6, 3-1).
- Pitt's current streak of seven consecutive sweeps are the most for the program in any fashion since earning eight consecutive in 1991.
DID YOU KNOW?
- The Panthers (22-1, 11-0) are the lone Division I volleyball team to outscore each of their 2019 opponents.
- Despite its lone loss to then-ranked No. 4 Penn State (Sept. 22), the Panthers outscored the Nittany Lions in five sets (26-28, 25-21, 21-25, 25-20, 14-16), 111-110.
