Pitt Notches Two Victories Sunday
PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh softball team earned two wins against Fairmont State, Sunday, recording a 4-1 victory in the first game and ending the day winning 8-1.
"I saw a lot of good opportunities for us to come out here and connect with our barrels offensively," head coach Jodi Hermanek said. "We got some great drives out of Katlyn Pavlick and Sarah Seamans, some big shots from Kaitlyn Kruger, but up and down the lineup I felt that some of the things we needed to individually work on, we were able to work out and get a little bit more focus on getting things successful for us."
Pitt bolstered a 4-1 victory in their first game of the day against Fairmont State. Junior outfielder Hunter Levesque scored first for the Panthers, advancing three bases off a hit from senior Connor McGaffic. Immediately following, senior infielder Kruger hit one over the left wall, giving Pitt a 2-0 lead to end the first inning. Fairmont State scored their lone run of the game in the top of the second inning, hitting one over the right wall. Freshman infielder Hope Alley put up another run for the Panthers at the end of the second. After stealing second base, sophomore Seamans scored on a single from McGaffic.
The Panthers kept their momentum, earning an 8-1 victory in their second contest. On Pitt's first at-bat of the game, Levesque hit one out of the field to start off scoring for the Panthers. Following, sophomore outfielder Pavlick homered over center field, sending in Kruger before her. In the bottom of the second inning, sophomore Sarah Seamans hit a bases-clearing single, adding runs in junior Morgan Batesole and Alley. On her second at-bat of the game, Pavlick hit her second homer through the center, giving the Panther a 6-0 lead entering the fourth. After two scoreless innings, Fairmont State recorded their only run of the second contest in the top of the sixth inning on a ball grounded out to first base with the bases loaded, ultimately leaving three on. Freshman infielder Kayla Lane scored her first run of the fall season in the bottom of the sixth on a home run hit from Seamans.
"Let's execute, be sharp, and know our control in the game. Let's know our commitment to the pitches and just have a little bit more conviction so that we know exactly what we have been working on as a unit is cleaned up," Hermanek said. "Let's keep the game as close to 21 outs as possible while we're still learning."
