Panthers Win Second Game of Saint Francis Fall Series
PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh softball team split its doubleheader against Saint Francis dropping the first contest, 6-7, and coming back to win the second, 6-0.
"I thought we did a great job creating some situations to happen with the pitches we were throwing to them to get some easy ground balls," head coach Jodi Hermanek said. "We're excited that some of the things we lost on today are definitely controllable and preventable. The second game they came out, they really made some adjustments offensively, they threw a great game between all three pitchers on the mound and defensively we were really gelling."
The Panthers were unsuccessful in the first game, ultimately dropping the contest 6-7 in extra innings. Junior outfielder Hunter Levesque put Pitt on the board in the bottom of the first inning, scoring off a sacrifice fly from senior infielder Kaitlyn Kruger. Saint Francis came out strong in the top of the second, scoring four times to take a 4-1 lead. The Red Flash managed to keep the Panthers scoreless for four consecutive innings before the Panthers could tie it up in the fifth. A walk from junior infielder Chandler Walter allowed Levesque to pick up her second run of the day, followed by junior infielder Lolo Sanchez and Kruger. On her next at bat, freshman Hope Alley hit a bases-clearing double, sending in sophomores Sarah Seamans and Katlyn Pavlick to tie the game 6-6 at the start of the sixth inning. Two more scoreless frames from both teams puts the contest into extra innings, played international style. Saint Francis picked up another run in the ninth that the Panthers could not match, ultimately dropping the game 6-7.
Pitt proved victorious in their second game of the day, earning at 6-0 victory against the Red Flash. The Panthers put up another bases-clearing double in junior infielder Morgan Batesole, allowing runs from senior infielder Alexee Haynes and Seamans. Sanchez added the next Panther point on a run after stealing second and third base. Junior catcher Brie Horrell added two consecutive points for the Panthers, returning home on a hit from Sanchez and later hitting a homerun over the center wall in the sixth inning.
"I'm excited to see them come out tomorrow and just bring more attack," Hermanek said. "I think we can pick up a couple of things defensively that we want to continue to grow and communicate on."
