Pitt Drops 2-1 Decision to Tar Heels
PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh men's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to No. 20 North Carolina Friday night at Ambrose Urbanic Field.
With the loss, the Panthers move to 4-4-2 overall and 1-2-1 in conference play. The Tar Heels improve to 6-2-2 and 3-1-1 in the ACC.
The loss is the first for Pitt since falling to then-ranked No. 1 Wake Forest, 2-0, Friday, Sept. 13.
"I think there's a lot of things you want to do differently," said head coach Jay Vidovich. "Matt Bailey did a great job it was just a defensive mistake, you're in a dangerous area on the pitch and he wanted to win the ball and close out the half for us and he lunged for it and he made a mistake… he put a fantastic goal in."
The Tar Heels netted two consecutive goals at the end of the first half and early on in the second half, while Pitt netted its lone goal in the 87th minute.
"The consistency of the performance was much higher, I think the belief factor was much better in how they collectively played," said Vidovich. "I think that was very good and I think one of the lessons just comes from Carolina, a good team will punish you when given the opportunity.
After nearly a scoreless first half, North Carolina got on the board as the buzzer went off just as the Tar Heels fired off a free kick on goal.
North Carolina went ahead 2-0 in the 72nd minute as Santiago Herrera put in a header after receiving a ball from the left side from Martin Salas.
The Panthers lone goal came in the 87th minute as sophomore Nyk Sessock buried a blocked shot off the UNC keeper. The late goal wouldn't been enough as the Tar Heels escaped, 2-1.
At the conclusion of 90 minutes, North Carolina finished with a slight advantage in shots, 9-8. Saves were even on the night at 1-1.
