Pitt Faces Howard in Non-Conference Action Monday

PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh men's soccer team [4-4-2, 1-2-1 ACC] is set to face Howard [2-6-1, 0-0-0 Sun Belt] in non-conference action Monday, Oct. 7 at 7 p.m. at Ambrose Urbanic Field in the Petersen Sports Complex.

LAST TIME OUT

The Panthers dropped a 2-1 decision to No. 20 North Carolina Friday night at Ambrose Urbanic Field.
The Tar Heels netted two consecutive goals at the end of the first half and early on in the second half.
Sophomore Nyk Sessock scored Pitt's lone goal in the 87^th minute.

THE SERIES – HOWARD

Pitt and Howard clash for the ninth time in program history Monday.
The Panthers lead the all-time series, 5-3.
The two teams are meeting for the first time since 2014 when the Bison defeated Pitt in Pittsburgh, 1-0, in double overtime.

SCOUTING THE BISON

Howard comes to Pittsburgh with just two wins under its belt, coming against VMI and Bryant.
The Bison are led by senior Andres Gomez who's pacing the squad with eight points off four goals this season.
In goal, senior Carlos Caro and sophomore Emery Simon have both seen notable action as keeper this season. Carlos has started four games and played in four, making 27 saves. Simon has started and played in three games, making 21 saves.
Howard concluded the 2018 season 2-10-3 overall and finished 0-4-0 in Sun Belt play.

KIZZA COMMANDING ATTENTION

Junior Edward Kizza closed out his 2018 campaign tied for third in program history for single-season goals (15) while ranking fifth in points (30).
Kizza ranked fifth in goals nationally, ninth in shot accuracy (.622) and 11th in points per game (1.67), while ranking first in each category among ACC players.
The historic season led Kizza to First Team All-ACC honors, Second Team All-Region recognition and a spot on the All-ACC Academic Team.
Through 10 games, Kizza leads the team in points (12), goals (5) and shots (28).
The Kampala, Uganda, native picked up right where he left off to start the 2019 season, recording a brace against No. 2 Indiana in the squad's season-opener Friday, Aug. 30. In the match, Kizza recorded the fastest consecutive goals in program history after scoring at the 35:24 and 35:31 mark, with the seven-second difference besting the old record of 34 seconds set by Michael Tuohy and John Cordier in 2013. Kizza scored the game winning goal on Sept. 30 versus Denver.

FRESHMEN FOCUS

Pitt's starting lineup usually consists of three freshmen in Valentin Noel, Arturo Ordonez and Veljko Petkovic, while Josh Hesson has made five starts thus far.
Petkovic ranks third on the team with eight points after netting three goals and two assists. He's appeared in nine games and has made five starts.

UP NEXT

The Panthers conclude their homestand Friday, Oct. 11 when they host the Virginia Tech Hokies at 7 p.m.
Pitt then hits the road the following week to take on Penn State Tuesday, Oct. 15 and Virginia Friday, Oct. 18.
