Pitt Victorious in Fall Ball Finale Saturday
PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh softball team concluded its fall ball season winning both contests against Robert Morris, 10-1 and 7-2, Saturday, Oct. 12.
"We were just a determined team from the get go. As soon as the first pitch was thrown, we were ready to win," head coach Jodi Hermanek said. "It was great getting the team out here and having them come out and set the stage with a presence. The way the day was going to go was definitely marked by their presence and their mindset. It was a fun day today, up and down the lineup."
The Panthers started out scoring early in the first inning with a run from junior outfielder Hunter Levesque. The Troy, N.Y. native scored as senior outfielder Connor McGaffic walked to first to load the bases for the Panthers. A single from sophomore Sarah Seamans sent sophomore outfielder Katlyn Pavlick in, followed by sophomore catcher Hannah Bach to end the first inning. Levesque picked up another run in the bottom of the second, after stealing second base. A double from Pavlick allowed Levesque another run. On junior infielder Morgan Batesole's second at-bat, she scored a home run over the left wall, giving Pitt a 7-0 lead. In the bottom of the fourth, Levesque hit a home run through center field. Following, Pavlick hit a bases-clearing double, sending in Levesque and junior infielder LoLo Sanchez. Robert Morris scored their lone run of the game in the top of the seventh inning.
The Panthers had a slow start to the second game, earning their first run in the fourth inning as freshman outfielder Taegen Lewellen hit one over the right wall. Following, Seamans hit a double down the middle, sending in Sanchez. With the bases loaded, a single from junior catcher Brie Horrell allowed a run in Bach, as freshman infielder Hope Alley was tagged out before reaching home at the end the inning. Sophomore Chandler Walter gave the Panthers a 4-1 advantage, scoring on a double from freshman Kayla Lane. On her second at-bat of the day, Lewellen hit her second home run through right field, allowing a run from Lane as well. Sanchez scored once more to give the Panthers a 7-1 victory.
"Looking forward, we're going to continue to work on routine plays defensively," Hermanek said. "Just making sure we know our job and what's being asked of us each situation and that we're clean and crisp winning those roles. Offensively, we'll keep working to hit together as a unit. Not just individual swings, but how to hit together in a lineup. It was great getting a chance to get out here today and putting these things in motion by all the players on roster."
