PITTSBURGH – The Pitt women's basketball team (9-13, 0-8 ACC) wasn't able to overcome a hot shooting Virginia Tech team on Thursday night inside the Petersen Events Center as the Hokies picked up the 74-58 win. The Panthers outscored the Hokies in the second half but the Hokies connected on 13 triples in the game to notch their first ACC win of the season.
"It was a tale of two halves for us tonight," said head coach Lance White. "I thought our second half was the way you have to play. We talked to our kids a lot about hoping things will happen or making them happen. I thought in the first half we did a lot of hoping. Hope that the shots would go in and not play defense. In the second half I thought we had a much better intensity with how hard you have to play in the ACC. Whenever you dig yourself that big of a hole, you don't rebound the ball, it's hard to be competitive in the ACC."
Rebounding was a major factor in the game for the Hokies as they out-rebounded the Panthers 46-27 for the game while also scoring 13 second chance points in the win. The Panthers forced 21 Virginia Tech turnovers on the night but the Hokies turned 13 Pitt mishaps into 25 points compared to just 20 points off turnovers for the home team.
The Hokies got out to the early 6-2 lead before the Pitt offense began to find their groove as Jasmine Whitney netted her first jumper of the game and Kyla Nelson drove into the lane and finished off a layup to tie the game, 6-6. Virginia Tech came out of the media timeout and went on a quick 8-0 run before Cara Judkins ended the run with a layup for the Panthers. Whitney was able to end the quarter with a contested three as the game went to the second quarter with the Hokies leading 22-13.
The Hokies were able to open the game up in the second quarter as they opened the quarter on a 9-2 run before Danielle Garven nailed a jumper to end the run. After a Nelson three cut the Virginia Tech lead to 11, 31-20, the Hokies went on a 9-0 run to give the visitors the 40-20 lead. Garven finished the half with back-to-back jumpers and Ismini Prapa nailed a triple as the Panthers headed to the locker room trailing the Hokies 48-29.
After back-to-back triples extended the Hokies lead early in the third quarter, the Panthers were able to score six straight points as Whitney, Garven and Jaala Henry each recorded a bucket while the Pitt defense forced six early turnovers. The Hokies responded with seven straight before Whitney ended the third with back-to-back fast break layups to send the game to the fourth with Pitt trailing 64-43.
The Hokies maintained a 20-point lead for most of the third quarter but the Panthers continued to fight and were able to outscore Virginia Tech 15-10 in the final frame. Garven knocked down back-to-back jumpers and Nelson drilled her second triple of the game to close out the scoring for Pitt as they fell 74-58 on Thursday night at home.
Garven finished off her night as the Panthers leading scorer as she netted 16 points and six rebounds on 8-for-14 from the floor across 31 minutes of work. Whitney got back on track offensively as she netted 15 points, a season-high eight assists and three steals while Nelson came off the bench and netted 10 points and two rebounds across 23 minutes.
The Panthers were able to win the battle in the paint 34-20 and the fast break scoring category 10-0 but the Hokies connected on 13 triples, a season-high given up by Pitt. For the game, Virginia Tech shot 47.4% from the floor while the Panthers shot 41.7%.
