Panthers Resume Action Saturday, Feb. 2 vs. North Carolina
BLACKSBURG, Va. – The 13th-ranked University of Pittsburgh wrestling team drops its ACC opener to No. 12 Virginia Tech, 27-6, Friday night at Cassell Coliseum.
Pitt suffers its second consecutive loss of the season, moving to 8-2 overall and 0-1 against ACC foes. The Hokies improve to 6-2 on the year and collect their first conference win of the season.
Two Panthers recorded wins in the loss in redshirt junior Taleb Rahmani at 157 pounds and junior Demetrius Thomas at heavyweight.
"It was a frustrating day for us," said head coach Keith Gavin. "We started out one guy down and didn't pick up the slack in the other weights. We lost some close matches where we just didn't bite down and make it happen."
The Hokies recorded wins through the first four weight classes before Rahmani got the Panthers on the board at 157 pounds.
Rahmani trailed 3-1 with 1:30 to go in the third but a reversal and an escape by LaPrade would bring the score to 4-3 in favor of LaPrade. With the clock winding down, Rahmani scored a takedown and added two nearfall points en route to the 7-4 decision over LaPrade. The win was the 12th of the year for Rahmani.
Virginia Tech went on to collect wins at 165, 174, 184 and 197 to lead 27-3 entering the final bout.
Thomas recorded the second and final win for Pitt at heavyweight, defeating No. 18 Billy Miller in an 11-7 decision. With the win, Thomas improves to 21-2 on the year.
The Panthers resume action Saturday, Feb. 2 when they host North Carolina at the Fitzgerald Field House at 2 p.m.
