Brechwald, Petrikis Tie for First Place on Vault
DURHAM, N.H. – Sophomore Haley Brechwald and junior Alecia Petrikis tied for the individual high scores on vault as the Pitt gymnastics team (4-2, 0-1 EAGL) completed its first road meet of the season at the University of New Hampshire Friday night.
"Today was our first road meet of the year and it was a big test for us," head coach Samantha Snider said. "It will be a good learning experience for the rest of the season. We had some great things happen tonight. Haley [Brechwald] and Alecia [Petrikis] winning the vault title was well deserved. We had some standout performances on beam. It was great to see Brittany [West] score a career high and for Kiley [Robatin] to step up as a freshman and perform well under pressure. We're looking forward to the next meet and to the rest of the season, competing to our full potential."
Brechwald and Petrikis each earned a score of 9.800 to win on vault, landing in a three-way tie with New Hampshire's Nicole O'Leary.
The wins mark the first individual titles of the season for the pair of Panthers. The win is Brechwald's first on vault since Pitt's 2018 season opener, and it is the first for Petrikis since the Panthers hosted New Hampshire Jan. 20, 2018.
As a team, the Panthers placed second in the quad meet, just behind the host Wildcats. Pitt earned a team score of 193.725 as New Hampshire came out on top at 194.925. The Panthers defeated Bridgeport (193.575) and Temple (191.850).
Despite falling to the Wildcats in their first EAGL matchup of the season, the Panthers were able to get a preview of the site of the 2019 EAGL Championship: the Whittemore Center on the UNH campus. Pitt will return to New Hampshire for the Championship March 23.
